I'm one of those ,you know the ones who pay less for their car insurance because they're safer drivers

Re: It's a pity that over 50's are not retested every year to renew their drivers licence
It's a pity all drivers who don't know they have indicators, or do know, but don't know how to use them, are banned for life from driving, also ban the silly idiots, with their tunnel vision who are way over your side of the road forcing you to nearly mount the pavement

I hate those they're driving along and give yards of space for parked cars as they pass but nearly force you off the roads as you drive towards them

Yup, one of the ones "I've never had an accident" but caused 100's with those who can see being forced to swerve to miss you :hehe:

Re: It's a pity that over 50's are not retested every year to renew their drivers licence
Now thats strange but I do object getting told how to drive by someone who is part of the agegroup of the worst offenders of using their phone whilst driving. Most of us of elder generation dont tend to do that, probably because we are deaf.

Maybe you should have had your eyes open as well

Re: It's a pity that over 50's are not retested every year to renew their drivers licence
Why not?
When I passed my test in 1980 there was far less traffic on the road, no theory test and cars were far more basic.

Re: It's a pity that over 50's are not retested every year to renew their drivers licence
And on the subject of cyclists, now you've started me off, driving to the station the other day I was faced with a woman cyclist coming towards me on a blind bend on the wrong side of the road riding down my cul de sac to take a shortcut through the (pedestrian) gulley to the main road. Half a mile later, another twonk taking a shortcut by riding the wrong way around a roundabout.

Yes why not
And why is the top speed still only 70 MPH because when it came in there were no seat belts, cars were flimsy death traps and nearly all of them had shit brakes?

I remember borrowing my mates car one lunchtime in school, driving back from countisbury avenue shops went to turn right to St.Illtyds, changed gear and the gear stick - the whole thing mind you, came off in my hand.

I did my test in 1978, I had a theory test, 3 questions asked by the examiner at the end of the test.

I had a mk2 Escort once and the gears got stuck in 1st, I had to drive all the way home in Ist from Ogmore

Re: It's a pity that over 50's are not retested every year to renew their drivers licence
Almost got squeezed into the kerb when on my bike the other week. She was so close that I was able to give the car a thump as it was alongside me.
Her grey haired passenger (with wslking stick) was probably giving her instructions cos her eyesight wasn't too great.

Re: It's a pity that over 50's are not retested every year to renew their drivers licence
My mate's car was an Escort as well. The passenger seat was so loose that if he pulled away from the lights too quick the passenger would go Arse over tit into the back.

Re: It's a pity that over 50's are not retested every year to renew their drivers licence
My first car was a hillman imp, I had a deck chair as a seat for a week or so.

It's a pity-that under 30s are-not-retested-every-year-to determine if they can exist without being umbilicaly connected to their smartphones
-
Re: It's a pity that over 50's are not retested every year to renew their drivers licence
If you said over, say, 65's, I could understand. Some of the very older people leave a lot to be desired, probably understandably. But over 50's!!! **** off.

Was it an Austin or Morris 1100 by chance? That was one of its endearing little habits as I remember!

Ah ok. I had an Austin 1100 and the worst time was when the gear stick came out just as I changing down going into a roundabout. This was in Dagenham, Essex, not a place known for its mild mannered, "after-you sir" type of driver especially on roundabouts where it was basically a case of the quick or the dead!

Re: It's a pity that over 50's are not retested every year to renew their drivers licence
My first car was a Talbot Sunbeam - the engine used to carry on running for about ten seconds after I removed the key from the ignition.
Used to put in three quids worth of petrol at a time. Sold it when I was skint for £50.
I never worried about leaving it unlocked in those days either - mainly because it was a piece of rusty shit that even a gyppo wouldn't bother nicking.

Re: It's a pity that over 50's are not retested every year to renew their drivers licence
Driving Tests should be compulsory for all cyclists regardless of age. As should colour blindness testing.
Traffic lights apply to all road users, including cyclists, as do junctions, give ways and roundabouts.
& don't get me started about the feckers riding on pavements!

I've got a bell on my bike now to warn pedestrians to get out of the way

Same thing happened to me with my first car, a Mk. 1 Escort c. 1981 on Gabalfa Interchange of all places.
The car however had a wicked stereo system!!

I am 68 and have just come back from a 150 mile drive on my Harley Davidson. Does this mean I have to keep it in the garage now the?
