Shocked but also not shocked if that makes any sense. Great singer and Wham were serious 80s heavyweights.

Only in his 50s, so I am shocked - despite the drug abuse.
Talented guy, a very good songwriter although went a bit crazy during his mid-life crisis.

That was really mean, but it made me laugh.

No, it doesn't make sense. Either you are shocked or you aren't, make your mind up.

Re: Bloody Hell, George Michael dead now
It was his last Christmas.
RIP George

Re: Bloody Hell, George Michael dead now
George Michael was never in the Prince or Bowie class for me and I loathed Wham with a passion, but he was a major music figure who, I thought, did some pretty good solo work at a time when his life and reputation seemed to be unravelling. Like Arfur says, this news didn't come as a complete shock to me for some reason, but 53 is no age at all.
RIP.

We'll behaving an Obituary forum if this keeps up.

Re: Bloody Hell, George Michael dead now
Someone go wrap up Morrissey in cotton wool and never let him leave his house.
RIP George.

Re: Bloody Hell, George Michael dead now
I would guess Carl Palmer in particular is looking forward to the end of 2016.
This article
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/music/new...died-in-20162/
really brings home how badly hit the music industry has been in 2016 - the "rock and roll lifestyle" of the decades from the sixties onwards in the twentieth century is taking it's toll it seems.

Re: Bloody Hell, George Michael dead now
RIP George.
He put out some great tunes during the period where he wanted to show what he could really do.
A shame that things had all seemingly gone too far him to be taken seriously as an artist, especially by the US audience and MTV.
He had a great voice and could own a big stage:

Was a great front man always thought he could have taken over after Freddie, in Queen, as he had the same flamoyant presence on stage, truly good voice would of been a great match, certainly better option that Paul Rodgers whose great blues based vocal didn't really fit into Queens quick style.

Re: Bloody Hell, George Michael dead now
i've been waiting for this for a while not shocked in the slightest.
George needed to come in (recovery) but its a lot harder than coming out.

Re: Bloody Hell, George Michael dead now
I liked the man and his music. He was hugely talented and a cracking songwriter. Wham were a breath of fresh air back in the early 80's. He was also incredibly good looking. He had everything really but seemed a tortured soul. Genuinely sad about his passing. He perhaps should have reached the heights of a Bowie or a Prince because he really had the ability to do so.
-
Re: Bloody Hell, George Michael dead now
Surprised there hasn't been anywhere the level of tribute paid to GM as there has to others that have died this year such as Bowie/Prince.
Maybe I'm too young but I always thought he was a superstar, not quite at Bowies level but not far off.

Re: Bloody Hell, George Michael dead now
Judging him purely on musical ability, he was top drawer. Great voice, great songwriter, and great stage presence.
Ironically enough though, my favourite tune of his was his cover version of Terence Trent Darby "Let her down easy".

Just wondering what great songs he wrote?

Re: Bloody Hell, George Michael dead now
I'm wondering why people are eulogising George Michael. Okay, many are thoughtlessly following the lead of a sympathetic corporate media 'cos he could sing a bit. He was a convicted druggy, convicted road menace and convicted pervert. If those who died prior to 1950s were to be transported to the present day they would likely be amazed at a society so morally corrupted it idolises a narcissistic low-life.

Don't think anyone on here has said they "idolised" him. Most posters including myself have only commented on his musical ability.

He wasn't all bad.
I'm struggling with some calling him a musical legend mind.

He was certainly guilty of some pretty crude behaviour. Then again nobody is suggesting he was a saint. He also did a lot of good raising money for the NHS and children's charities. Its a shame you can only focus on the worst elements of his life and ignoring all the good stuff.

Re: Bloody Hell, George Michael dead now
There's 7.4 billion people in the world and every Sky News and nationwide ITV and BBC news summary I've seen since his death became known has led with his passing. That fact in itself is incredible... that the demise of, let me repeat, one person, is currently the most newsworthy item on the planet. I might understand if he had discovered free energy or a cure for Alzheimer's, but he was some pop singer for crying out loud.

Re: Bloody Hell, George Michael dead now
It even knocked the monumentous news that the queen's cold prevented her from attending Christmas Day mass off the breaking news banner.
