Wakefield is nowhere near as big as Cardiff. I doubt if it's even half the size.

Just googled Wakefield and it says it has a population of 99,000 (as of 2011)
How can that be bigger than Cardiff?

According to Wiki the 2011 (census data) population of the City of Wakefield was 76,886 and the District of Wakefield was 325,837.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/City_of_Wakefield
Either measure, it is much smaller than Cardiff.

Warrington , Salford, .
Swansea should have its status striped, as its a Town
-
Re: Is Bristol the least successful English footballing city?
Exeter , York , Lincoln are worse.

Re: Is Bristol the least successful English footballing city?
Actually the article refers to multi-club cities.
Basically the whole point of this thread is the answer needs to Bristol.

In terms of population I'd say Birmingham.
However Bristol must be pushing for top spot.

Whenever i go through it Wakefield always feels like a middling West Yorkshire town - not a city to compare with other places at the top end of the list you linked.
Anyway, the answer to the OP must still be 'yes'.

Villa have won The European Cup. And been Champions and FA Cup winners 7 times.

Sorry, thought that we were contemplating current failures.
Apart from some mickey mouse cup for lower league sides, have Bristol City won anything?
-
Re: Is Bristol the least successful English footballing city?
They should just merge and get over it, the place isn’t big enough for 2 clubs anyway.....
-
Re: Is Bristol the least successful English footballing city?
Wakefield is the biggest city without a recognised football team.
Bristol has to be the biggest city without any real history in the top flight over the last few decades.

They borrowed the Welsh Cup off us once
Wikipedia are surprisingly damning "Since relegation in 1911, they only returned to the top division from 1976 to 1980"

Bristol City 37th
Cardiff City 44th
Swansea City 50th
Average league position over many years.

This is correct most English northern towns populations appear far bigger than they actually are due to being under control of , in this case Wakefield ......take away Castleford , Pontefract etc and the urban population of Wakefield drops to a small city
Bridgend county borough has a population of 130000 , Bridgend has a population of about 40000! .....but throw in porthcawl , maesteg and the Bridgend valleys and hey ho you have this skewed population data

They are indeed , Leeds is again a metropolitan city which basically envelopes lots of smaller towns and merges with Bradford .......which again itself often is given as a city including bingley , which would be like adding penarth and Barry to the population of cardiff
Leeds is a big city , bigger than Cardiff but nowhere near the size of Glasgow
I think around 500000 is nearer the mark
-
Re: Is Bristol the least successful English footballing city?
Leeds population includes towns like otley .......miles away from the city of Leeds
It's like Newcastle , population wise it is given as smaller than Cardiff but go there and it is part of a huge urban sprawl that merges into one ......Newcastle, Gateshead, North Tyneside etc
It's all very confusing but go to Manchester city centre and compare the size of the buildings and amenities to Leeds and the difference is enormous ......Manchester city centre is huge and serves as an urban core for the city of Manchester , whose population is given as smaller than Leeds ......and Stockport , Wigan , Oldham , Rochdale , Bury etc
-
Re: Is Bristol the least successful English footballing city?
Oldham ......population about 100k
Oldham metropolitan borough population .....230 k !!!!

That's the size of the city , the rest is all the town's within a ten mile radius
Imagine the population of Cardiff if we included penarth , Barry , caerphilly etc
-
Re: Is Bristol the least successful English footballing city?
Has anyone considered including Penarth, Barry, or even Caerphilly, when calculating Cardiff's population?
