Bands that were off their heads on drugs but made great music
https://youtu.be/lVIev94s7Mo
Jane's Addiction , blew poodle haired glam rock out of the window
Although considering how much heroin and crack they were using it's amazing they are still alive

they were off their heads - whether it was drugs was another matter. Amazing Live - Blur cite them as a major influence as do Napalm Death, Radiohead and Marillion to name but a few. Had the privilege of seeing them live a long time ago - will never forget it - what a riff

"inna gadda da vida", and it stuck.

I saw them at The Astoria in London in early '91. I didn't think they were that good to be honest

Re: Bands that were off their heads on drugs but made great music
All of the truly great 60s bands produced great music whilst off their collective trolley. Off the top of my head: Jefferson Airplane, The Doors, Love, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Traffic, and the Moody Blues. Probs loads I have forgotten here. Also Hawkwind were off their tree on LSD when they produced a lot of their best 70s music.

I'd say a good 80% of their songs are about taking drugs, recorded while on drugs and music to take drugs to.

How dare you, you're talking about my namesake !! You're not wrong though, the Moodies were famous for their parties, in which copious amounts of illegal substances were consumed. They were also great friends with Timothy Leary, who was a strong advocate of psychedelic substances.
Many of their songs had barely concealed references to drug use, such as Fly Me High, Floating and Higher and Higher.

Roger Daltry was on one of rock music cruises I go on with my wife and he had a Q & A session on deck. He talked about his experiences in The Who and I was very surprised to hear that he was never into drugs at all, which is amazing when you consider the lifestyle of his co band members. I would have put good money on him being a drug user. He said that he spent much of his time on DIY projects and had no time or the inclination to indulge in substance abuse.
If you had said to me back in the 70's which rock star looked most off his trolley, without hesitation I would have said Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull. But yet again I would have been way off the mark. It was only his stage persona and he has said during interviews that he never took drugs. Probably the most eloquent of speakers you will ever hear.
