Pulis appointed manager of Sheffield Wednesday
Sheffield Wednesday have announced the appointment of Tony Pulis as their new manager. The 62-year-old succeeds Garry Monk, who was sacked by the club earlier this week.
Pulis returns to management after leaving Middlesbrough in May 2019 and having previously managed the likes of Stoke City, Crystal Palace and West Bromwich Albion.
The job at Hillsborough is Pulis’s 11th in management and he takes charge of a club that sit second-from-bottom in the Championship having been hit with a 12-point deduction in July, with the sanction reduced to six points last week following an appeal.
A run of four straight league defeats was ended with a 1-0 win against Bournemouth before Saturday’s goalless draw with Millwall, which proved Monk’s last game in charge.

Re: Pulis appointed manager of Sheffield Wednesday
I suppose they are looking for someone to get a fighting spirit together and escape relegation ,he might just pull that off .

Re: Pulis appointed manager of Sheffield Wednesday
Did Flint play under him at Boro and play well? Could that make a permanent deal slightly more likely?
Good for Pulis; he's 62 now so is quite possibly his last job in management and has found a big club willing to be his last ride if that is the case. Can't imagine how their fans feeling going from Monk to Pulis though.

Re: Pulis appointed manager of Sheffield Wednesday
The reduction of the 12 point deduction must have been a hell of a boost, like being given two wins without playing a game.

Middlesbrough paid £7m to sign Flint when Pulis was managing the club. A year later, Pulis was gone and they sold Flint to us for £4m.

Warnock is over 70 and still going, may be Pulis could go on for as long.
Pulis might not be a great manager, but unlike Warnock, he has never managed a team to relegation.

Re: Pulis appointed manager of Sheffield Wednesday
I like pulis , he's like warnock
Percentage football , tight defence , get the ball in the opposition box as often as possible ......because that's how you win games

Yes. Perfect tactic in the Premier League.

I saw a recent news item where Pulis was really talking up Aden Flint - before Monk was sacked.
There have also been a lot of news items this week quoting Barry Bannon saying Pulis was the worst manager he ever played for - again I think the interview that was taken from predated the Monk sacking! It wasn't that he disliked Pulis, just that there was no place for Bannon's type of player in a Pulis team.
Interesting times!

Re: Pulis appointed manager of Sheffield Wednesday
Pulis has been sacked from most of the clubs he has managed, invariably with the fans shouting for his head at the time due to the negative brand of football his teams play. He is also one of the few managers to be sued (and lose to the tune if £3.7m) in the high court, for fraudulent misrepresentation, by a former club (Palace) for return of a £2m bonus he requested be paid early, only to give his notice in and leave the club one day later. Perhaps not such a legend after all ?

He would have been judged as a good premier league manager until as recently as the 2017-18 season (which started with his captain being sold). Took Boro to play-offs in Championship too, a 6 game horror show stopping him from doing it back to back seasons. We'll have to see if he's still up to it but expect Wednesday are hoping to do as Boro have done under Warnock.

Re: Pulis appointed manager of Sheffield Wednesday
The details of Pulis' contract haven't been disclosed, but there was a lot of (quite well informed) speculation in recent days that he was likely to be appointed only to the end of the season - to get Wednesday out of trouble - and that a different manager for the longer term would then get the job.

I'm sure that most managers have been sacked from most of the clubs that they have managed

Flint's season at Middlesbrough is a bit odd. They had the joint-best defensive record in the Championship, matched only by Sheffield United, and Flint started 39 of their 46 matches. Boro and Sheffield United conceded far fewer goals than any other team that year - they both conceded 41, while the next best was was Leeds with 50. Nevertheless, Flint was sold to City at a significant loss at the end of the season.

Hasn’t been sacked from as many clubs as your hero Warnock and has never been relegated from Premier League! Certainly an upgrade on Warnock even though they use similar tactics! Look what has happened to Stoke since he left, got them promoted and kept them in Premier League for 7 years!

Pulis‘S CV shows he’s easily a level above Warnock, and has achieved much more at the top level.
Premier League manager of the season for a start.
Few managers outside the top 4, ever win that.
Plus, a number of decent finishes with Stoke.
Warnock’s never even been good enough to keep a team in the Premier league, for one season.
He’s a serial failure.
Championship is his level.

Is that the Pulis who led Stoke to a number of good Premier league finishes, and worked a miracle against the odds in keeping Palace up.
The same Pulis who won Premier League manager of the season, something few outside the top 4 every season ever win.
He’s a league above Wsrnock, who’s never kept a team up even.

How many promotions has Pulis had?

Really? Warnock has proved himself to be a good manager if you want promotion. He's never done it in the top division. He didn't with us.
His record in the top flight is woeful even compared with Dave Jones.

How many consecutive seasons has Warnock had in the PL? I'd regard survival in the top flight far above promotion.

He's never had the chance , we were a few dodgy decisions away from staying up , I have no doubt he could have established us as a mid table side
It wouldn't have been pretty to watch but like the Stoke pulis side it would have given south east Wales top flight football for more than a strawberry season , the way people forget what warlock did for us is laughable . And the same people are very quickly forgetting how well Harris did for us last season too.
Its like championship manager on here its ****ing cringeworthy

Pulis has had lots of jobs in the Champ where he's done nothing. His record of kicking clubs on is quite poor too. I'm not knocking him and they definitely won't get relegated but clearly both have flaws. Warnock is probably a better manager in the Champ, Pulis certainly is in the PL.

Warnock has had plenty of failures in the Championship as well. Warnock has had the longer career, but Pulis is unlikely to trouble Warnock's Championship stats as he has had far less time managing in the Championship as he was keeping a Premier League team going for many seasons.

What do you mean "he's never had the chance"? He's has plenty, look at all the promotions he's had. He's had plenty of chances and usually fails, look at all the relegations he's had.

If you don't think we were just a few dodgy refereeing decisions away from staying up you clearly didn't watch cardiff city when we were in the top flight under warnock as you say you did
You are a fibber and I claim my 5 quid

Warnock did what only one other manager , with the team in a red shirt , did since 1962 and thats get us promoted
We went down because of a couple of dodgy refereeing decisions , the club should have stuck with him but as usual our fans turned
Now we have Harris who took us to the play offs but already people want to see the back of him
Its like talking to the dead on here

Pulis has never been relegated, Warnock five times and QPR and Crystal Palace also sacked him when in relegation position and both stayed up! That’s why we should have sacked him at Christmas and put a Premier League Manager in place like Pulis and we would still be in top League!

You could equally claim from a raft of reasons.
Failing to win any of our opening 8 games.
Failing to bring in any decent striker of note.
Failing to get anything from Huddersfield and Newcastle early on in the season when they were both down to 10 men.
Not taking our chances against Burnley.
Weird team selection at already relegated Fulham and a bizarre substitution.
Having one of the worst home defensive records in PL history.
Having the worst passing stats in the PL in a decade.
Losing 24 games in a season. No side has ever stayed in the PL having lost so many games, even when there were 22 teams in the PL. Only a few relegated teams lost as many (or lost more).
Do you seriously think that if we were still in with a chance of survival going into the last game of the season, we would have played the same team and given them such freedom? No chance.
Yes, the Chelsea decision was a big one. We don't mention the Sol Bamba offside goal against Brighton in the last seconds, though.
We had a few dodgy decisions go against us. We had dodgy decisions go for us. That's football. To blame relegation on a few refereeing decisions is absolute nonsense. We made our own luck at the end of the day. We simply weren't good enough. I reckon, without Etheridge, our season would have been even worse.
