457 British soldiers dead , at least , since the US led invasion
Thousands left with injuries both physical and psychological
And of course afghan casualties
Its all very well wanting democracy , women's rights etc but you are wasting your time with the taliban
The UK sending in rescue troops reminds me of the American helicopters saving people from the viet cong

The Taliban are disgusting pigs. Their treatment of the afghan people is appalling the media doesn't give the real picture it's watered down for the news and so on..
No war is great but we had to do something sadly it was always going to be an ongoing conflict.

To be fair we've been meddling in Afghanistan for 200 years.

Re: Afghanistan , what a waste
Groups like the Taliban and Isis move in massive convoys across the desert, why doesn't the Afghan/Syrian/US military use airstrikes against them?

'The Great Game' that Russia and The West always lose.

Thats the only way to end the conflict .
If the Taliban take control of the country , there will either be acceptance or a revolution against their ways.
Who is the judge to say our morals are the right ones ?
And if we are going on a moral crusade , I don't see much being done against the chinese and their treatment of the Uighurs.
Of course that has financial consequences . Finance always trumps morals.

American economy thrives when the war machine is in full swing - should imagine airstrikes don't quite fill the economic requirements of a war from their end. America are overdue a war.

Is it correct that Trump was the only president in years not to go to war?

If you look back over the last 70 years the yanks have got involved in a crazy amount of wars, almost like they need it for their economy.

I guess if you are an educated women with a job in Kabul then it might be time to flee the country, unless your happy to live in the kitchen and never be seen out again…..

You could argue its a waste of time full stop for a lot of Afghans , their army is much bigger than the Taliban 180k ish , bee trained and armed, funded , supported over the last 20 years , Taliban is approx 50k diffence though they have a greater motivation and goal , where as the Afghans army /people and town have such a splintered motivation , beliefs , tribes , with so many troops they should be able to make some form of a fight as a unit ,sadly they cant come together to defeat the force they face ?

No. None of Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter, Gerald Ford, Richard Nixon, John F. Kennedy and Dwight D. Eisenhower started wars.
Trump is responsible for the "deal" that led to this troop withdrawal though.

Re: Afghanistan , what a waste
Just googled and read a piece by Isabel Debre (AP NEWS)30th April ‘21
“Counting the cost of America’s twenty year war in Afghanistan”
Full of facts
Two I picked out;
America has paid over 530 BILLION dollars just in INTEREST on the money it’s borrowed to fund the war
America has also paid over 296 BILLION dollars in medical and other care for veterans
The USA only went in after 9/11 “looking for Bin Laden and other terrorists”?
He was found ten years later in Pakistan
Bottom line
Complete waste of money 💰

And in current times where Covid has cost billions it was never sustainable.
Maybe Russia or China will have a go next ,its got to be some else's turn

Re: Afghanistan , what a waste
During Obama’s two terms he authorised 563 drone strikes in Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia
Afghanistan saw 1337 weapons dropped often wiping out innocent civilians who were classed unfortunately as collateral damage 🤨

Re: Afghanistan , what a waste
History repeats itself
The First Anglo-Afghan War was fought from 1839 to 1842.
The British successfully intervened in a dispute between emir Dost Mohammad and former emir Shah Shujah who they installed upon capturing Kabul in August 1839.
The main British Indian force was almost completely annihilated during its 1842 retreat from Kabul (except some prisoners and a doctor)
The British recognised two things first if they left Afghanistan alone it would allow the Russians access to northern India through the Khyber Pass and second they needed to avenge the destruction of their army so back they went.
The Afghan army was defeated, Kabul was blown up and the British army withdrew from Afghanistan leaving Dost Mohammed to resume his rule.
The parallels are astonishing

Re: Afghanistan , what a waste
I actually saw the film on this very subject- highly informative
Carry on up the khyber 😂👍

Special forces could have done that anyway, taking out bin laden, incredible waste of life. Will they ever learn?

Re: Afghanistan , what a waste
The USA signed a peace Agreement with The Taliban, which seemed a bit soft and gave the Americans a 'way out' after it was clear that they were not going to crack that sizeable Nut. It allows the Taliban control in certain areas, with conditions. There's no way on this Earth the Taliban were ever going to subscribe to any of those conditions, and the Americans knew this before anyone signed on the dotted line. A big fail by the west in my opinion.

Re: Afghanistan , what a waste
Massive failure
That’s why I’m saying throwing any more money at Afghanistan whether military or aid is a complete waste.
As Tuerto said we’re not going to crack this sizeable nut
Leave the warlords and tribes do what they’ve done for thousands of years- kill each other

Sadly that is the answer , its cost the USA $975 billion.

Well, troops were in Afghanistan during Trump's time in office. So what is your criteria? Trump ordered airstrikes in Afghanistan, Somalia, Syria and Yemen. And he wanted to bomb Iran. Does that count as "going to war"?
During Jimmy Carter's time in office, not one American serviceman or woman was killed.

Re: Afghanistan , what a waste
I've been wondering how secure Kabul is as a city. Seems like there's a real difference in mindset/outlook between the Kabul city folk and the country bumpkins.
Could we see a situation where Kabul becomes a kind of city state, and the rest of Afghanistan separates itself from them. Quite surprised there hasn't been a real push to at least secure the surrounding area.
No way of getting rid of the tailban. But would be nice to think there could be somewhere safe for the non fundamentalists out there
