Belarus/Poland situation
Pretty scary listening to Gen. Nick Carter on the Andrew Marr programme yesterday when he said that of course we would support our NATO allies in Poland in the event of a threat from Russia. Echoes of 1939 I thought, just a different adversary this time. With all that's going on - COVID and climate change - who in their right minds would want to provoke another war in Europe? Insanity.

It's a bloody mess. Russia / Belarus unquestionably using migrants as a political tool, but that is the case in many cases.
The EU should accept the (fairly low numbers) people currently on the border, and the means to stop them getting to Belarus, which are wholly political, should be stopped too. I think Turkey has stopped flights to Belarus in recent days.
It's a tinderbox and Russia is fighting for geopolitical power.
Belarus, incidentally is the present day country that proportionately lost more people in WW2 than any other.

Russia seeks to influence and/or take control of the former USSR satellite states, of course.

Absolutely. Ukraine, Belarus, and to a lesser extent the Baltic and Balkan states are all susceptible to Russian attention based on the USSR's sphere of influence. They don't want to lose them to the west.

Not forgetting thier growing influence in Africa.
Any vulnerable state where they can create instability is a target for them and China .

A nuclear war might just do the job actually - reduce the human population at a stroke (human activity is responsible for climate change) and solve both problems simultaneously. There might be a rather large surge in CO2 emissions initially of course! :frown:

Well put it this way, we wouldn't need to worry about possible relegation for City anymore.

Re: Belarus/Poland situation
It's a mess and a worry but I do think it's sabre-rattling and countries trying to exert their influence in a post-covid world. Everything has been thrown up in the air and the cards may not land in the same place they were pre-covid.
I think Russia is still trying to find it's 'raison d'etre' in a post communist world too and as the world decarbonises we need them less and less.

Re: Belarus/Poland situation
Ooooh when it suits old Europe they get all edgy about migration , pity they didn't listen to Camerons plea about migration and free movement before Brexit descended upon us .
Appogies below is a cut and past from the evil Times
"" European Union has been accused of “dehumanising” refugees after suspending asylum rules to allow the detention and speedy deportation of irregular migrants at Poland, Latvia and Lithuania’s border with Belarus.

Russia's raison d'etre is to keep the oligarchs in power.

They got eyes on Africa , they love to cozy up to areas of vulnerabilities and instability .
I expect to see a bare chested Putin to appear as Tarzan anytime soon in Africa , with Liz Truss pointing her tank at him ?

Re: Belarus/Poland situation
I've listened Gen. Nick Carter and read a lot of what he's recently said. He seems to have a fixation about the Russians, and the perceived threat they present. Why ? They don't threaten Western Europe, especially the UK, and are challenging NATO's decision to increase their presence close the the Russian Border. I doubt France would welcome military maneuvers on their doorstep. There's absolutely no way Putin will back down.
Meanwhile the Chinese 'belt and Road' initiative arrives in Europe :

Heard Tobias Ellwood interviewed earlier. He seemed sure that war would break out in the next few days. So depressing.

Re: Belarus/Poland situation
I still struggle to believe this could actually happen. I still believe it to be sabre rattling by Russia, keen to let the world know it still matters (which they really do)
Would be deeply deeply worrying.

Rumours have it Putin is not likely to press the trigger as there's sure to be many bodybags returning to the Motherland , and Russians do not like that scenario.

It's not as if Putin is in charge of propaganda about The Motherland as well as the media in Russia. Or that he would be defeated at the ballot box.

What did happen to all those refugees on the Belarus / Polish border , did they find sanctuary in the beloved Russian controlled haven of Belarus

UK urges British nationals to leave #Ukraine now.
Israel evacuating relatives of embassy staff in #Ukraine, Reuters reports. Earlier today, Japan, South Korea, and the Netherlands advised citizens to leave the country.

Some of his posts on our transformation by Steve Morison have been very positive. I just wonder if he's Putin the cart before the horse.

Indeed, Russia with Iran (Persia) and certain northern African countries are down to be key players in such mayhem according to Biblical prophecy. China being the other key mover wiping out a third of the planet - and who would scoff at that after their recent dry run, killing people in every nation on Earth.
It's no coincidence that Russia and China are now bedfellows on many issues >> "President Vladimir Putin’s show of strength with President Xi Jinping in Beijing last week amid the standoff with NATO on Ukraine was intended to demonstrate that Russia and China were on the same page on the “core interests” of upholding “international equity and justice” in the face of US “unilateralism”, and supported each other against “external interference and regional security threats” >> REPORT

Perhaps Russia and China are going to be the leaders of the free world , ironic if it happens as their power and controls have been built by Western wealth and need.

As Russia has already invaded and still occupies the Crimea and Donbass areas it's very credible that they may take a bigger bite of Eastern Ukraine in particular.

Yes, just looking at recent history it does seem ironic.
Yet it's interesting to note that while Russia (together with Iran and other middle eastern nations) and China have only recently been identified THE major world threats to global peace, that many Old Testament (2,500+ years ago) passages not only point to their regions of the World but also discount the USA from involvement at that time*
The one other key power to rise up is a strong leader of another group of nations - which started with "The treaty of Rome" in 1957. That 'empire' would be marked by a woman riding a beast - I wonder if any of you well travelled individuals have spotted WHO has adopted that symbol?
* Some have speculated that just one nuclear EMP will take the USA back to the Victorian era, then making it powerless to defend itself.
