Had me tearing up.
A nice tribute, but you see those pictures of him chatting to that cameraman and think “why?” - he hardly comes across as someone who would take his own life less than a day later.
Very nice tribute. Even 10 years on I still can’t get my head around it and never will. So sad that he felt
It was the only way out when on the surface he had it all his family, dream job going amazingly and so many people who cares for him. Just goes to show you never know.
Regardless of who he was Paul, Suicide is the most selfish of acts!!
Your heart goes out the the poor family and friends he’s left behind who will forever be haunted by the question- Why??
Very sad and makes you wonder how do things get that bad, as humans have this in-built desire to survive.
That’s your opinion Ninian
You’re talking utter bollox
Really
I suffer with PTSD and Clinical Depression- I was a victim of historical sexual abuse
I endured years of silence
Finally speaking out
The Police were fantastic to be fair
I went to Chester Crown Court were my parish priest had eight years jail
I’m still on medication to this day
Could tell you plenty about mental health mate
Often thought about suicide
I’m trembling as I’m typing this
I’m a survivor tho
Got four kids to think about
They’re my only hope for a brighter future
Suicide IS A SELFISH ACT
I couldn’t bear to think of leaving them with the haunting question of Why???
****ing hell just what this board needs another shit wind up.
Really 😡
I wonder how many times Dan Walker has re-run that episode of Football Focus through his head?
That's a tough watch and mad to think it was 10 years ago.
You are the only person on this board thick enough to get taken in by this.
And you’ve got a cheek telling anyone to have a day off given you post 700 posts of utter shite everyday.
And suicide isn’t selfish it’s a consequence of terrible mental health. Human’s number one function in life is to survive. Imagine your mental health getting to such a point that it overrides that.
You really are an arsehole CB
I’ve put my mental health problems on here and am shot down
Go feck yourself
And I’m not interested in your opinion Ninian
If you have genuine mental health issues I apologies for saying it was a wind up but posting “suicide is selfish” in a thread about suicide is about as low effort wind up you can get.
If you want sympathy maybe you could have a bit more sympathy and understanding for others too, rather than ignorantly saying “suicide is selfish”
I’m not looking for sympathy you TWAT
anyone sick enough to LIE about such sickening things needs shooting
Google Father John Lloyd
All Hallows Church
Then go and **** yourself
In my own experience and having known several people to have committed Suicide I think I have had enough personal tragedy in my own life to call Suicide an absolute selfish act
Ask the kids and family left behind 😡
I disagree it’s a selfish act, it’s a desperate and sad act taken by someone whose mental health is absolutely ****ed.
It’s terrible for the families but it isn’t an action taken with selfish motives.
These things should be discussed with suicidal people not called selfish. It’s things like that, that make mental health worse.
Sorry you’ve had to go through all that, I honestly thought you were on a wind up. I wouldn’t make light of something serious like that. Sorry!
Apology accepted
Sorry to hear what you went through Sunnysideup but I'd also disagree it's selfish.
Selfishness is usually to profit personally from something.
To say its a selfish choice to commit suicide would be to say it's a choice, I'd argue that person feels he/she has no choice and often would also feel they are doing family and friends a favour by no longer being around.
I've had my share of dark thoughts but don't believe I've ever come even close to acting on them. I still had a choice and could still think rationally, people that commit suicide can't think that way.
They are the victim, nothing else, there is no selfishness in their actions.
This is heartbreaking. Remember watching it live

Very powerful tribute, well presented by an obviously emotional Dan Walker.
Must admit to having a tear in my eye at the end. Well actually at a couple of times during the piece as well
Very moving tribute. We always highlight the need for men to talk on here and the importance of maintaining good mental health, which is great. The next thread then turns into a slanging contest between two people who need to be proved right and treat each other with complete distain, then others pile in and add to the abuse. This should be a place where people feel like they can share their views and have them treated with respect, at the moment it's far from that environment.
Let me ask you a question: in a thread that linked an emotional tribute to Gary Speed, do you think it was appropriate to boldly state that ‘suicide is the most selfish of acts’?
Do you think such a ridiculous comment should be either treated with respect or left unchallenged?
That's not the comment I was referring to mate. It's the more widespread bickering over completely pointless things that gets me.
I've no issue with comments being challenged, it's the way it's done at times that bothers me (and I've been guilty of it in the past, so not taking the moral high ground here)
Fair enough. However, to me and to others it seems, a comment which read: "regardless of who he was, suicide is the most selfish of acts!" in relation Gary Speed's death was crass, ignorant and needed challenging.
I was going to say it's incredible that people still think like this in 2021, but sadly I don't find it even remotely surprising.
It definitely needed challenging. I think it’s one if the more disrespectful things you could possibly say about someone who’s committed suicide.
I honestly thought he was on the wind up, probably made it worse and I just shouldn’t have said anything.
Really touching video from Dan Walker.
"Regardless of who he was, suicide is the most selfish of acts! You’re talking utter bollox. Suicide IS A SELFISH ACT! You really are an arsehole. Go feck yourself, I’m not interested in your opinion. I’m not looking for sympathy you TWAT. Go and **** yourself."
All of the above was posted by one individual in a thread that was supposed to be about a tribute to Gary Speed. But nobody's perfect, right?
I think you just need to stop now. Maybe show a smidgen of humility. It was a pretty unsavoury exchange, but the 2 involved sorted things out. I don't really understand why you feel the need to then put the boot in again. In the context of what he has shared I think it's really low for you to do that.
