Buffalo Tom were a straight up jeans and t shirt rock band
With regards to grunge I think it was a daft genre
Nirvana were a good band imo , good crossover of punk and rock
Sound garden......hard Rock , Pearl Jam .....ditto
Stone Temple Pilots , Screaming Trees , Alice In Chains all good rock bands liked by people wearing silly ripped jeans

Mudhoney were/are the best of the lot. They never got what they deserved. I found out recently(ish) that every member has always held down a full time job. Tragic.

My first big go to when I think of this question are:
The Chameleons (not helped by consistently questionable artwork): https://youtu.be/SHYBC8qeh-I
The Sound (released a fair amount of records before sadly the singer took his own life): https://youtu.be/vdA159Apd4I

The Adventures went on to to chart very low with a couple. But the latter never made it.

Re: Criminally Underated Bands Thread
I'm am slowly recalling the greats that were underrated
Green on Red
The Replacements
Jessie Malin Ex D Generation ( playing Newport Soon Le Pub 21st June 2022)
Long Ryders
Jason and The Scorchers
For those folk who like the unsung hero's of music Bob Mold of Husku Du , who in my mind have paved the way for Pixies, Nirvana, the Foo Fighters, Metallica, Green Day and many more plays the Globe in June 28.

The ‘Mats are definitely one of those sort of doomed, “shoulda been a contender ‘ma” type bands. Loved their stuff from the beginning till ‘pleased to meet you’.
Bob Mould definitely worth seeing live. Husker Du are/were one of my favourite bands ever, although they’re not recognisable in a mainstream sense they definitely had a big influence (in certain circles) so I never quite think of them as being underrated.
Mentioned Red on Green and I did have a bit of a re-listen to those Paisley Underground bands recently. Rain Parade in particular I liked a bit.
As you mentioned Big Black I thought I’d post Cardiff’s own answer (Slowjam): https://youtu.be/QzA19BnsdGE

Gentle Giant, a really underrated prog-rock band:

John Weathers (drummer) originally from Carmarthen. He later moved to Swansea and played with Man after Gentle Giant disbanded.
