Best and worst age decades?
20's were the best, 50's is a bit of a difficult one, kids leaving and needing financial help and a lot of guidence, although I like that aspect, but failing parents is a tough period to go through!
Does it get better, and what are/were the best/worst for you?
-
Re: Best and worst age decades?
20s were amazing. It really saddens me to see so many young people go through mental anguish in their 20s because, frankly, life generally only gets more complex.
30s okay. Just into my 40s.
Unfortunately I've had an unwell parent for the last 15 years. It is a horrible experience, although far worse to lose them young of course.

Re: Best and worst age decades?
20’s a bit hit and miss
30’s good. Got my life sorted out both personally and professionally
40’s Decent and consolidated
50’s Tough. Lost both parents and work hard going.

Re: Best and worst age decades?
I’m enjoying my 60s, take plenty of holidays, weekends away etc, that’s my tip. You’re really not on this planet very long. Keep a little bit back for a rainy day but don’t be financially over cautious, no good having a few bob but you’re too infirm to enjoy it and that massive nest egg will do you no good when you move permanently to Thornhill.
-
Re: Best and worst age decades?
I always tell my kids that your twenties are the best time of your life. Mine certainly were.
-
Re: Best and worst age decades?
Nothing like being 23, glad I enjoyed it to the max…slowed in my 30’s and sorted the big stuff out:hehe: marriage and the joy of kids and all that brings.

Re: Best and worst age decades?
18-25, OMG. Freedom sex, alcohol & rock & roll
40s at my mental peak
60s tired of everything & falling to pieces
-
Re: Best and worst age decades?
I was a bit of a late developer. Things started to come together for me in my 30s. My 40s were quite good too.
50s, I was physically fit but started to get mental issues, nothing too serious, just sometimes I would get feelings of regret and worthlessness (I had not experienced such feelings prior to this period).

I agree, 60's fingers crosssed most of us have a fair chance at good health, 70's on it's often too late for many to travel, I intend to enjoy them.

Agreed forties were great too, 50's are generally going well, except we will lose our remaining parents and it is a terribly sad period.

Re: Best and worst age decades?
20s were great nothing but playing football, pub and dating.
30s my knee disintegrated, my hangovers last up to 3 or 4 days and I've settled down.
Would love to be in my 20s again.
-
Re: Best and worst age decades?
Don't think I have good or bad decade's just good or bad times - bad times normally around Ill health or bereavement in the family - everything else I normally count my blessings and am grateful for how lucky I have been

I didn't think I would live very long and cashed in my pension when I was 20. I'm now 66.

Re: Best and worst age decades?
20s all over the place. No direction at all.
30s calmed down, more thoughtful, realised I wasn’t qualified for anything started night school
40s Started to work in higher Ed. Gained the qualifications I needed.
50 good career and life trajectory
60s found the love of my life and re found direction and interests in different things.
I have been blessed to have had more than a second chance and I can’t believe how fortunate I’ve been in my later years

Looking back on this post, I think the key is going to be retiring as early as possible in your 60's or before if you can, you never know how long you've got, but the problem is there is always a bit more to be earned!

I 'sort of' retired when I was 58 due to redundancy in 2003..and couldn't get another job in IT due to age. This was followed by a failed property development on the Heritage coast which left me in no end of debt....which I eventually cleared.
In January 2011 my wife of 40 years died suddenly in her sleep...never been ill...went to bed as normal and woke up to find....the absolute worst moment in my life. Official retirement date July 2012.
Treat every day as if it was your last....with a new family and young sons I certainly do....thankfully I seem healthy enough...but then so did my late wife...I treasure every day I wake up.

Yeah people who don’t enjoy themselves and just plod through life until they can retire at 65/70, what can you do then? Enjoy it all now if you can…just reading 79blues story is enough to make you realise it’s all about the now, not the future…..

Re: Best and worst age decades?
For me the best decade is the thirties. You are old enough to have a bit of nouse, bit of life experience, and you have money. Between the age of 29-40 I travelled the world, bought my first house, got married, had kids etc, a couple of not so nice things occurred to, but it was by far the most eventful decade of my life.

Northern Cemetary these days.
Thornhill is full for burials Unless you have a plot already booked
I have my plot already booked and paid for in the Northern
That is a fair chunk of the nest egg, because the Council charge nearly a grand just to open it when my time inevitably comes (and the same again to buy the thing!).
Just to cheer you all up.

Re: Best and worst age decades?
I hated my 20s. Chose to leave school without A-levels to be a carer for my mother, who had lots of health issues. In hindsight, worst thing I did.

Best decade should be your 20s but having the finances and knowledge of your 60s/70 year old self :hehe:
