It’s an American thing although I hear ‘mailing it in’ used more often
-
Re: West Ham phoning it in.
They will be phoning it in on talk sport.
What the frig does it mean.
I hate these American phrases

Re: West Ham phoning it in.
If only there was a way for people in other countries to see what America looks like and hear how Americans sound and the things they say. Maybe see and hear some American stories or something like that. That would be cool. ("Cool" is American slang for something good)

As long as rookie or soccer doesnt become words we use. Rookie being used in golf is bad enough. Feckin yanks!!!

Re: West Ham phoning it in.
Phoning in three points by the look of it.

Not joking, and I did have a little think about it.
It's some kind of euphemism that I've never heard of before. It would appear, from this thread, that I'm not the only one who hasn't heard of it before.

But West Ham are winning.
So this explanation makes no sense.
-
Re: West Ham phoning it in.
Guess we won't have Everton away next season then

Re: West Ham phoning it in.
did t realise it was an American saying, I've heard it plenty of times, most recently about Robert deniro taking increasingly lightweight and low effort acting roles

It means phoning is great - or sick as they say.
-
Re: West Ham phoning it in.
It’s looking like the most interesting thing about the final day of the Premier League season next weekend will be to see how Sky markets it - the battle for eighth position is going to be fascinating.

Re: West Ham phoning it in.
I didn't know what it meant either.
A while back I also didn't know what pegging meant, so I googled that. Google then thought I was interested in stuff not related to hanging out the washing.
-
Re: West Ham phoning it in.
3-1 to the Hammers!
West Ham apparently doing a good job of "phoning it in".
I just hope the City remember to pay the phone bill and do likewise all next season.

Taking patronising to a new level, fair play.

However I did Google it and it appears its to do something with low effort.
So as west ham won 3 1 you were either saying they won 3 1 really easily or you posted it when Leeds were 1 up. Am I close?

I may have got this wrong but when I was a nipper I remember a gypsy woman knocking on our door and asking if I "wanted a pegging ". All makes perfect sense now..

This canard that "soccer" is an Americanism is getting old. When I was a kid, which was a very long time ago, my little friends didn't knock on the door and ask if I could come out to play "football." It was "soccer."
Here's the iconic David Coleman from 1969, not giving it a second thought:

I lived in America for six months...I must say I had no idea what the phrase 'phoning it in' meant!
Learn something new every day.
That said I am no more likely to use that than yo say that someone is the 'winningest' team.
