Uk government should just take it over and keep some of the jobs at least…..lots of businesses rely on that place being open for their own existence….

Re: Tata Steel: Thousands of Port Talbot steel workers at risk
Apparently, once British Steel's Scunthorpe plant also closes its blast furnaces, UK will be the only G20 country not able to make steel from raw materials
-
Re: Tata Steel: Thousands of Port Talbot steel workers at risk
It’s estimated knock on effect to the local economy: 12,000 jobs lost and £3.2 billion.
-
Re: Tata Steel: Thousands of Port Talbot steel workers at risk
It's going to devastate Port Talbot, and to a certain extent, Bridgend as well. A very short-sighted decision - if they planned to close it, then work on a replacement should have started a long time ago. Wales is turning into a job wasteland.

Not to worry, Drakeford will put plans in place before he fecks off 🤔🙃

Tragic but not a surprise.

How can they when it flies in the face of their green agendas.
Tata is screwed
-
Re: Tata Steel: Thousands of Port Talbot steel workers at risk
I'm hoping it's just TATA angling for more money off the Gov.

Couple that with electricity, gas and most of our water in foreign hands, half of our national institutions [post office deliveries etc] owned by multi-nationals, it's difficult to argue against the view that the UK is built on banking, insurance and property..

It is a massive shame.

Re: Tata Steel: Thousands of Port Talbot steel workers at risk
The Tories don’t give a flying fig about Wales or any other area with Labour voters. They’re only interested in the “money men” Trouble is Labour is just as bad, because they’re incompetent of leading the Country.

Don't be a dick.

Re: Tata Steel: Thousands of Port Talbot steel workers at risk
This is the the worst thing to happen to Wales since we left the EU.

It's more than that now, mate.
It's becoming more and more apparent that the UK Government haven't been no help at all.
Welsh Gov simply can't help, whether they want to or not. Welsh Gov's powers only really extend to keeping somewhere like McArthur Glen open. They are powerless when there are international supply chains.

Re: Tata Steel: Thousands of Port Talbot steel workers at risk
Huge victim of the general green agenda which is going to be a big political battle in coming years.
What annoys me is that this shit will still be made, but in China now, with less environmental regulations and then shipped to Europe from there.
-
Re: Tata Steel: Thousands of Port Talbot steel workers at risk
Agree with comments about the green agenda. It is costing thousands of jobs yet India and China are producing lots of cheap steel from their heavy uncontrolled industry

Seems they can do what they like, whilst we don’t make anything anymore…

really makes no sense, made in china with zero regard to the environment, then shipped over her on ships burning loads of fuel, its lose lose
-
Re: Tata Steel: Thousands of Port Talbot steel workers at risk
China and India are just doing what we and America used to do
Expand
It was OK for us n the days of the empire so whilst it's bad news for the UK economy as we can't compete and its very bad news for the environment its just the way things are
When we had an element of protection from government and the EU the UK car, steel and petrochemicals industry was lauded
But Cameron and the brexit mob got what they wanted and its only going to get worse and worse
Only the people who relied on heavy industry propped up by Brussels yet voted to leave Europe can really answer why they ticked the box
it still astonishes me and there is no way back

yea, but the Modern world is making all the right noises about climate change and saving the planet, yet we seem to ignore China ( and India etc etc ) who dont really care, so why are we playing by the new rules and they aren't ? ?

Not really in Drakefords remit.
It's up to David TC Davies, Kemi Baddenock and the UK govt to ensure they provide the support they promised when they signed the deal with Tata back in the Autumn.

Exactly, its why protests by people like JustStopOil are ill conceived. If the UK unilaterally stops oil exploration you dont take away the demand for oil, so oil will still be resourced, just not by us. Same as the closure of the opencast at Merthyr, the cal will still be required, e'll just import it. We are crucifying our economy for the environment when in the grand scheme of things we are having no affect whatsoever as we are just moving the emissions from the UK to other more polluting countries.

It's been under threat of closure for years. They are closing it because they can make the same product for cheaper elsewhere and Port Talbot is a loss maker. Tata are using Climate Change as a smokescreen.

There’s something just not right about it, we will end up paying more for everything as it’s imported, food, utilities etc….with tides and wind this country could easily produce its own power, most of Europe cannot do that. Another £300 a month on gas and electric eh

True, we will play by the rules and damage the economy, while the rest of the World laughs and pay lip service.

Absolute bollocks, as usual. The only reason we have Chinese steel is Cameron, who vetoed the european ban on it which was designed to protect European steel.
-
Re: Tata Steel: Thousands of Port Talbot steel workers at risk
Let's face it though, Tata wouldn't be doing this if the plant was profitable. This is motivated by money rather than any desire to cut their carbon emissions, even though they're citing it as part of the reason.

Bingo, the gov should buy the plant. There's literally zero talk of them doing anything which would have been unthinkable as little as a decade ago. It'll be cheaper, too.

Mark Drakeford will be happy - as it lowers Wales carbon emissions by 5 million tonnes apparently

Apparently electric furnaces as the ones they want to use
-
Re: Mark Drakeford will be happy - as it lowers Wales carbon emissions by 5 million tonnes apparently
Tory privatisation started the downfall of the steel industry. Sunak and the previous Tory PM's to blame/UK will become the only country in the G20 without the capacity to make its own steel from scratch.
Tata steel are a privately run company who have chosen to put all there resource into Tata steel Holland.
Funny thing is Corbyn would have been on the side of the workers. Re-nationalised the steel industry and sorted the energy companies to boot.
It's sad not so many people don't understand the British political system. The only politicians who can have a greater input on the job losses is the UK government
-
Re: Mark Drakeford will be happy - as it lowers Wales carbon emissions by 5 million tonnes apparently
There is either a market for it or there isnt. If there is a market for it then the cost of producing it needs to be looked at. I remember seeing the energy costs for Tata for huge compared to other countries.
ps - if they shut it down - then we can buy it for a quid and we can start polluting the atmosphere again or just buy an electric furnace instead of a coal fired one. We are out of the EU, so the EU laws on stopping state intervention / competitor advantage are gone - unless they are part of some other agreement ?
Well done though on getting the Tories and Corbyn in on the same sentence.
pps just for info - it was the Chinese that screwed it by dumping steel on the open market. China produces 800 million tonnes a year - we make about 8 - we are insignificant other than niche.

Didn't the Railway lines made from Chinese steel melt in the heatwave.UK Government could have put and import tarrif on the imported steel
