Good jobs which no longer exist
Jobs gone from where I worked on the old electricty board.
Meter readers (Fing smart meters) , and a guy who went around in a van checking which street lights needed changing

Things have moved on, I doubt they’d be laying down, the ceiling about four foot above them with a pick axe in their hand. There’d be a lot of button pressing and non human involvement at the sharp end. Obviously a lot fewer employees than the past but there would be some work for areas that badly need it.

I did the job for a fair few months in 2017 because I needed time to do something else which was very important. Worked for E on, gave me a van, money was bearable. As soon as I had done what I had to do I quit, and went back to my normal work. Some of the things I saw in the short time were real eye openers.
About 6 months later they made redundant (sacked) all my erstwhile colleagues because with the roll out of so many smart(?) meters they were no cost effective.

Herb Strewer - distributed herbs and flowers throughout the royal palaces in order to mask less pleasant aromas such as those from the Thames before the construction of London's network of sewers.

Actually the same person as Knocker Uppers (or Knockers Up) would often snuff out the gas lamps when they went around knocking on doors and windows to wake people up pre alarm clocks
