just reading Peter Whittingham stats
Played almost 400 games Peter Whittingham averaged a goal or an assist every 2.5 Championship games
Geez that's some consistency over a long period of time
I can't think of anyone else that comes anywhere near that consistency can you ?
The only player who comes to mind is Billy Sharp - although he wouldn't challenge Whitts for the title of 'the best ever'.
Bellamy played for us in the Championship, his record suggests that he was a much better player than Whitts. Not a long time Championship player but one of the best to grace the division. Many other top players have appeared in the division too. Perhaps the title of the thread should have included ‘over x amount of seasons’.

the best single season by a player that I can remember was Adel taarabt, at the age of like 21.
There's a difference between best player to play in the Championship or best Championship player.
Whittingham must be very close to the top of the second part of that statement. If not top.
It would be interesting to see Whitts stats before and after his season with us in the PL.
Agree with that. Much as I like Bellamy, I think Rooney may be a stronger call for 'best player' who played in the Championship - if we are talking about their whole careers - not just the time they were in our league.Quote:

I wonder if Ali Dia still dines out on the fact that he was a Premier League player? There’s no doubt that he was. Every player mentioned were, at one time in their career, Championship players. I think the thread’s title could have been tweaked a touch. Whitts was a Premier League player, 56 appearances in the division for Villa. He could’ve definitely been able to claim that he was a Premier League player as well.Quote:

Apart from Ramsey and Trundle. i'd agree with you. There has to be some criteria, otherwise the top ten would be a combination of Paul Merson, Robbie Fowler, JFH, Wayne Rooney etc. The players mentioned would be candidates for a top 100 premier league players, or at least considered, and i don'r think that they would want that Trophy in their cabinet.Quote:
