Do you tip tradesmen?
So just interested in people's opinions do you tip tradesmen?
I normally do, but have a lot of work going on at the moment and the tips are adding up :sherlock:
Just wondered if it's frowned upon to pay the exact amount. :sherlock:

No, unless it's a good mate and I know he's doing the work too cheaply, I make it up to what I think it should have been.
If they won't take the extra I try and make it up to them with beer or tickets or something in the future.

Re: Do you tip tradesmen?
I feel the quote you get would likely be with enough tip built in.

My father is a builder
He's never expected a tip in his life and gives it back. But does expect to be given teas, coffees etc.
Probably why he's booked up all year round.

I only let them use the crockery if they leave a deposit. Usually £20.

That's really harsh. Just don't pay them or something surely.

Well I do make sure they are well-beveraged.
For example, I have one coming up that is £1950. In my head I should be giving £2000. But £50 is £50.
I'm tempted by the above to go with the actual amount but just interested to see the general consensus.

Yes totally agree with this I've got a good mate who always does a cheap job but I always make sure that he's paid properly. I've also got no issue to not tip if it's a one-off job. My problem is more when it's someone used more often but not "mates" if that makes sense, when you know you'll have them back at some point

If I get on with them. Have a decent chat. They do a cracking job and go above and beyond then it’s a no-brainer for me. If they chip the bone china whilst having a brew then I just get Mrs C to pay them.

I’d tip but I’ve usually given all my spare dosh annd belongings away. Kept my Billy Bragg vinyl though.

This may be bad but we have separate crockery for trades so this isn't an issue.
I hope this is common practice. For us it's the ones at the back of the cupboards (rinsed first of course).

Re: Do you tip tradesmen?
Heck no - the tip is in the inflated cost they are passing onto me!
But as a courtesy I’ll do a coffee run or bacon sandwich run for them

Re: Do you tip tradesmen?
I give delivery operatives a can of Coke, if they want it and I've had a 100% take up so far!!

When you say delivery operatives, I'm guessing you mean for particularly big deliveries?
Would cost a fortune otherwise

I have never heard of anyone doing this and wouldn't even cross my mind to do it sorry :hehe:

Re: Do you tip tradesmen?
Impossible to do, as there is no such thing as a tradesperson these days !
Two week course and you’re deemed qualified

This is exactly the reason you never let them use the best crockery!

I've got no issue with this, I just don't trust them not to smash or chip my favourite mugs

Well for anyone who is facing the same dilemma.
I didn't tip today and it went fine.

It is, I just overcharge, solves the problem:thumbup:

Re: Do you tip tradesmen?
Tip if you want, don't if you don't want to.
I thought these types of "help" thread were Sludgies forte, he's been lacking lately.
As for the "cup dilemma" shall we say, what a bunch of pompous twats :hehe:
-
Re: Do you tip tradesmen?
I might have once, but don't think I have since.
What i do though is pay them in full within 24 hours of them finishing the job. I hope that's appreciated more than if I give them an extra few £.
-
Re: Do you tip tradesmen?
Not generally, I did have a guy come in and skim some walls, paint and a few bits, he was much cheaper than expected and did a very good job, gave him and the lad an extra £20 each for a drink, in the hope if I need him again he sees it as a good job to come back to.

My problem is not knowing what the current rate is. I’m having a lot of work done on the outside of the house at the moment and the quotes varied massively, like 3x in some cases. I used to get maybe 10% - 20%. It’s tough to know who to trust. I’ve just paid, £11k for a job where I ended up doing the floor tiling, painting & lighting myself. The bricky told me yesterday that the builder hasn’t paid him the money I paid the builder. My trust is very thin at the moment.
