Half of fish and chip shops to close by 2025?
Is it really that bad? Thinking about it, I’ve only been to a chippie a couple of times in the last year or so.

Re: Half of fish and chip shops to close by 2025?
I could get a bag of chips for sixpence as a kid, now before you all go on about that was then, it was working class food at working class prices
Now (depending on where you live) you are looking at 12-15 quid or more for fish and chips. There are cheaper options.

Re: Half of fish and chip shops to close by 2025?
I can't think of any other product where the price seems to have "gone mad" since Covid thank Fish and Chips. It used to be a cheap tea but now its almost unaffordable. The only time I really get it is in pubs as part of a deal nowadays.
Oil and heating went up a lot, but they have come down now but doesn't seem to have been reflected..

Not where I live you aren't. Cod and chips (large) - £9.50.

Re: Half of fish and chip shops to close by 2025?
whenever I go to a chippy, I'm constantly taken back by the price there days.
in my mind it's about £1.50 for chips and £3.50 for fish
unfortunately it isn't as cheap as chips any more

Most chippies do haddock and cod. Haddock is more expensive these days (used to be the other way around).
A lot of chippies have closed though, and even the fancy national chains like Harry Ramsden's have been and gone around us - lasted a few years then closed (partly due to Covid, but failing anyway).
Local Chinese take aways are also disappearing although Indians (actually Pakistani/Bangladeshi) are surviving for now.

That's probably the one thing from the UK that I miss!!!
Used to be Friday night regular at The Cardiff Road chip shop in Aberaman when I lived in Aberdare.
Always cooked fresh and never disappointed.
Couple of years ago when I stayed in Cardiff for a few months I sampled most in the town....never that impressed apart from the F&C meal in The Queen's Vaults.

Re: Half of fish and chip shops to close by 2025?
Part of the issue with the price is the lack of portion control. You get way more now than when I was younger.

Lot of waste with chips isn't there
Huge

Re: Half of fish and chip shops to close by 2025?
£5.40 for fish and chips at Maelfa Chippy in Llanedeyrn. Good value & delicious but far too many chips though. Can never finish it.
-
Re: Half of fish and chip shops to close by 2025?
My parent’s nearest chippy - fish and chips £30+ for 3 of us!
Each serving included a battered whale and a hundredweight of chips.
Ridiculous waste. Won’t do that again.

Re: Half of fish and chip shops to close by 2025?
I'm trying to eat healthier and it must be over 12 months ago since I had fish and chips from our local chippy. Usually the chips are soggy and a poor portion of fish so no great loss not having them.
I know it's not healthy but I started making my own pasties and they are f'in awesome and very easy to make. I use beef steak or mince, potatoes, onion and swede and tons of pepper and a little bit of salt. I cheat and get ready made pastry. Egg wash is essential, give it a go and you won't be disappointed.

It's also easy to cook potato wedges in the oven which taste b1oody good.

Not sure if it's still the case but cost of fish such as cod and haddock have risen due to a reduction in supply caused somewhat but not fully by a reduction in UK quotas.
The fishing industry generally has taken a bit of a battering (pun intended) the last few years.

Re: Half of fish and chip shops to close by 2025?
Left over chip shop chips are delicious reheated in the air fryer next day. There is no need for any waste. If you don't have an air fryer just buy one portion and split it between two of you (assuming you have someone to share with).

It surprises me that Wales doesn't have much of a fishing industry given most of the country is surrounded by sea.

Plenty of coastal seafood such as cockles, whelks, lobsters but I guess it's too tidal along the Channel for any substantial trawling industry.

Re: Half of fish and chip shops to close by 2025?
Was shocked the last time I went. Very rare now.

The Welsh fishing industry has never really registered with me but found this interesting.

we rarely visit as we are all Veggie, we had some chips about 2 weeks ago, before the last time we had chips was at the beach down Bournemouth way shortly after one of the lock-downs
3 portions of chips for 3 adults and a 16yr old should enough we thought, I kid you not, must have had a portion and a bit left, they were massive, but at £4.80 a portion I guess we should expect good portions

Re: Half of fish and chip shops to close by 2025?
Still be thousands left, they are everywhere.
I've never been in one where there is no queue or demand..
Think they secretly breed from a Chippy into Chippies .
The clever ones now do alternatives, such as fried chicken, Kebabs, curries, burgers. ( all part of one's five a day)
They will survive I'm sure.. Folk love em.

Too much Welsh sewage for my liking, stick to the popular fished delicacy of sausage in batter

I think all take-aways will be closed by 2030, once we are 100% reliant on 18th century windmill energy technology

Re: Half of fish and chip shops to close by 2025?
We have fish and chips around once a fortnight. Fortunately there's a very good chippy close by where fish and chips is around £8.50. According to the BoE inflation calculator, that equates to around £3.50 in 1990.
We don't often visit chippies if we're out and about. Too many poor standard places about and, despite the best of trip advisor reviews, we've been disappointed too many times. Greasy, pale chips are a no-no. Thick, greasy batter is another. Some places try and cook too much when it's busy and it's never as good.

Re: Half of fish and chip shops to close by 2025?
Like others have said, it's too expensive.
Last time I went it cost me about £25 for 4 people. Nobody had fish, i'm not rich. Won't be rushing back.
Could smash one now though

I'm like one of Pavlov's dogs reading this thread. Bloody gagging for some chips now!

This part of the catering industry is taking a battering.
