Anyone on here used to frequent the place in the late 80’s?
Had some half decent bands playing there. 2 of my favourites were Big Macs Wholly Soul Band, and Karrots.
Thursday evenings and Sunday lunchtime were my usual slots 😁

We used to go there from time to time. Not regularly though.
Frank Humhries can tell you about the time a bloke called Gito climbed onto the roof outside and jumped off in the expectation that we would catch him.
Poor bloke limped for weeks afterwards
I remember going there on Sunday afternoons.
Used to go there quite often on a Saturday night for an hour or two before wandering into town. From memory, there wasn’t a band there on a Saturday, but it was one of favourite Saturday night pubs.
Lunchtime chilli and rice..
At around that time I was friendly with BK who played bass with Time Out and I went there once at his invitation. That's it really.
I played there a few times, back in the day - never on the weekend though. The prime nights were always booked solid with the likes of Red Beans and Rice, Fire Down Below, etc. It was a bit of a closed shop.
I also played there a few times. It had a reputation of being a bit rough, but I never found it to be so. The covers band I was playing in at the time were always treated well by both the staff and the punters.
saw a few mod revival bands there in the mid 80's, Makin' Time etc, I was only a kid but my sister and her bloke were pretty well known within the scooter scene so I managed to get in with them
The Pub on the Mud
I practically lived in there from the age of 16 ! Popular bands back in the day, were Su Yu, and Kicking the Image.
Memory not what it was but seem to remember seeing a band called Zipper there having previously seen them play the Cross Keys in Llantwit Major.
I remember Zipper.....

For those not old enough to go out in the 80s where was this place?
I honestly don't remember it being called 'Bab's Bistro', but I'll accept that you are right.
'Jan's Kitchen', was that very close to the Clifton?
If it was, I went there a few times until the late hours of the morning. Rough as feck, some really dodgy looking characters, but they never brought grief upon you (unless you really went looking for it!).
Definitely Bab’s Bistro, owned & ran by Babs Burrows. Jan’s Kitchen was the old Numismatics Club, a block or two further up Broadway from The New Dock Tavern. Ran by a right dodgy character, Billy Hood. As you say it was a den of iniquity, he later changed the name to Clayton’s Prison. We very often called in there after a night in the Oak or the Dock. You had to buy a plate of chips though as it was a stipulation of the licence most probably. Had some great laughs in there amongst the characters, great times.
Bab’s was a lot less chaotic than Jan’s, very popular early, early morning (I’m talking 6am ish) with blobbing dockers, breakfast & 7 or 8 Strongbows being popular on the menu.
The Inn..Cha Chas\ Jacksons \ Pepper Pot…Corfu….best nights out ever!
