Siopis - Signed for Panathinaikos - CONFIRMED

Re: Siopis is having a medical
Just posted on the rumours thread. Think that's good business especially if we get a fee for him.
Not going to get much game time moving forward and his value is only going to drop due to his age.

On his best days a very good player. Not too many ‘best days’ which could be said for a few of our players.
Sometimes off the pace, got caught with the ball and fell over a lot.
But thanks for being here and good luck.

Re: Siopis is having a medical
Uncharacteristic sensible move by the club. Hope we get a few bob, should do.
-
Re: Siopis is having a medical
Not sure there will be much of a fee if any, probably a case of us being quite happy to move his wages on and he also wanting the move.
Not really worked out, matches just often seem to pass him by and he is out of favour under Riza.
Not been the worst performer at all but he's probably one of the easier ones to move on with interested parties.
Best of luck to him.

He’s a current regular pick in the Greek international team’s midfield and it’s only a few months since he was playing well in a win over England at Wembley - we should be looking to get a decent fee for him.

We got him for nothing 18 months ago, he's been in and out of the team all season and he's 18 months older. I wouldn't hold out much hope on a fee. I think they'll want his wages off the books more than anything

And yet it seems odd to be getting rid of one of our better midfield players when Turnbull is unproven, Ramsay always injured and the new chap from Ajax also unproven. Ralls isn’t getting any younger either.
It probably suits him but I can think of a few others that I’d move on before Sio.

Do you think Siopis paid up his contract at his old club and didn’t get compensated by City?

Yes, it was about 200k according to WalesOnline.

According to WOL he joined us in the summer of 2024....
I was sure that was wrong, but knowing how reliable WOL is I though I better check in Wikipedia. While there I saw thus "interesting " fact, he has played 63 times for City and played he 63 times for his previous two clubs.

Well, whatever the compensation figure is, we should at least be looking to get that back.
-
Re: Siopis is having a medical
There's more players I would move on from this club before Sio.

You have to find another club that wants them.

Bingo. He's also behind Chambers, Ralls and Mannsverk.

I think we might get that much but people are talking about millions for him. I think that's very optimistic, he's not even a regular here!

I think any fee, with his wages off the book is positive. Would be suprised if it was more than 6 figures

Re: Siopis is having a medical
I like Siopis. He seems like a good laugh in all of the training videos he puts up.
And he's not without his strengths either - in the game against England he was getting rave reviews from England fans on twitter. Some Man-u fans were demanding they sign him :hehe:
I'm not sure why he hasn't been more successful here - perhaps he isn't as well suited to the more physical nature of the Championship, and in another league that is refereed differently he could be more effective.
I also think his passing is better than he gets credit for. There have been matches where i've thought he's been useless with the ball for us, but when I've checked after the game he's had better passing stats than any of the other midfielders - just for some reason his misplaced passes stuck in the memory more (perhaps more unforced errors).
He is the last person you want to see lining up a shot from distance though.
Anyway I don't think it would be out of the question to get some money for him, hes a good player in the right team i think

Re: Siopis is having a medical
According to BBC Wales, he’s one of the highest earners. It’ll be interesting to see how he gets on at Panathanaikos
-
Re: Siopis is having a medical
If Dimi goes too we're fked. We don't have any other dominant center backs.

Hold on: Ralls doesn’t play every game and is clearly ‘managed’ probably due to his age, Chambers has looked excellent in midfield albeit for a handful of game and we have never even seen Mannsverk play so I can’t see how you can say that.

Siopis doesn't suit the way we play that much and offers nothing in terms of possession or creatively. The days of needing a headless chicken in midfield are numbered.

Is he one of our better midfielders?

The fact that some might consider this says a lot about the strength in depth in our midfield.

Re: Siopis is having a medical
If he's no longer on the wage bill and a free its a good deal. If there's actually a fee involved it's a brilliant deal.
Can't fault him for effort. We need far better and there are better available anyway.
Good luck to him.

I echo this.
Siopis could never be faulted for his effort. There were a few games whereby he was vying for the MoM award.
However, he just seemed to lack that little something - passing ability, composure on the ball, whatever...
Good luck Sio!

The old international player reasoning is often an amusing one. We could have had millions if we'd have sold Darcy Blake after Wales lost 1-0 at Wembley but he had Wayne Rooney in his pocket all game. I was surprised to see that Joe Morrell is without a club despite nearly 40 appearances for Wales. I know it's all about country size - big countries occasionally have too many top players vying for the same positions and some have a minor international career as a result. Had they played for a smaller country, they'd be first on the team sheet.

Siopis was always the new Harry Arter.

Harry After, He was bad. His first touch was shocking and he couldn't tackle, yet he had a fine career. What do we know.....

Apparently, Siopis' medical is taking longer than expected - as he insists on running around and around the medical couch.
-
Re: Siopis is having a medical
A no brainer for me, and I'm surprised people are questioning it. He's undoubtedly a good player (as evidenced when he plays for Greece), but he's just not suited to the pace and physicality of the Championship at all.
At his age, that's a great move for him - a slower, less demanding league, and the opportunity to play for a massive club in his homeland.
For us, he's supposedly a top earner and the money can be better used elsewhere. Bear in mind that he had another 18 months to go as well, so getting him off the wage bill will be a relief.
With that in mind, if we gave him 200k to sign for us and he's been here 18 months (with 18 to go), a 100k fee would be fair to me.

Except he didn't seem to get the 'red mist' that Arter was inflicted with.
Siopis was often like a dog chasing his own tail - Arter was often looking for retribution for a challenge that had occurred previously, the ball seemed incidental to Arter.

I'd heard he took his medical notes from the doctor and passed them to the wrong receptionist

Be fair, that's not one of your best attempts at humour. :hehe:

Re: Siopis is having a medical
Last season, I was impressed with how he hustled and won the ball quite a lot.
This season, he hasn’t played well.
A move would be best for all I think.

Think Morrell had a pretty bad injury

Ah, if I was aware of that, I'd certainly forgotten. That's a huge pity.
