FT: Walsall 0 - 1 Wimbledon. League 2 play off final
Early stages. 0 - 0
Winners will be in the same League as Cardiff next season.

Re: Walsall v Wimbledon. League 2 play off final
Walsall quite close to me in Stockport but Wimbledon would be a new ground. Only missing Stevenage Burton and the new Doncaster one

Wimbledon would be a new one for me as well. Along with Stevenage and Lincoln.
Some of those other grounds I've not been to in a long time like Stockport, Orient, Exeter, Mansfield, Port Vale, Bradford - all over 20 years ago
-
Re: Walsall v Wimbledon. League 2 play off final
I was just going to post the xg score of Wimbledon 0.12, Walsall 0 when Wimbledon take the lead with a twenty yard shot - definitely a game that needed a goal.
-
Re: Walsall v Wimbledon. League 2 play off final
That's one of the worst halves of football I've seen. We will be playing one of these next season.
Wimbledon winning deservedly so as they have been less crap than Walsall.
-
Re: Walsall v Wimbledon. League 2 play off final
Walsall have been awful in the first half. They'll come good and nick it.
-
Re: Walsall v Wimbledon. League 2 play off final
Still don’t agree and never will that these play off finals should be played at Wembley.
3rd place should play 6th place at home in a 1 off game. 4th place should play 5th place at home in a one off game, then the highest finishing team that reaches the final should be at home in another one off game.
There has got to be an advantage for finishing higher after a long gruelling season.

Re: Walsall v Wimbledon. League 2 play off final
Okagbue of Walsall makes our defenders look like Maldini.
-
Re: Walsall v Wimbledon. League 2 play off final
Hoof ball is back in business.
Walsall look like they went player shopping from their shirt sponsor
-
Re: Walsall v Wimbledon. League 2 play off final
Lot of pinball and lack of composure.
Be good to see Wimbledon mind.
It's going to be an interesting season.

Re: Walsall v Wimbledon. League 2 play off final
I'd put in a sneaky offer for Joe Lewis. Played really well today and in the semi's. Just the kind of no nonsense defender we need. Welsh too - albeit a Jack.
-
Re: Walsall v Wimbledon. League 2 play off final
Better side won, but it wasn’t much good was it.

Yeah, I was thinking the same.

Well, well, well. Wimbledon nest season. They were in the Isthmian League when we got promoted to the Championship. A new ground for many. And a few ex-city fans will be returning to the CCS as away fans next season.

You ain't lived till you've been to Sincil Bank Mike.
Centre of town to the ground just a 5 minute walk!

Any fan of 80s/90s indie music would surely regard a visit to the Cherry Red Records Stadium as a bit of a pilgrimage

I think I must be 10 years older than you. Groundhogs sprung to mind with Cherry Red :music:

They were actually in the Combined Counties League Premier Division in 2002/2003. Their first season after being founded as AFC Wimbledon. That's level 9.

Was looking 4ward to a trip to the Bescott(or whatever it's called now).
Disappointed.

Re: FT: Walsall 0 - 1 Wimbledon. League 2 play off final
Can walk to an away game from where I live, happy with that result.

Great shout, apparently the label was named after their song.
I did have a Cherry Red compilation, which may have cone free with the NME in the mid 80s. I do remember that some early Everything But The Girl songs were on there. Also political poet and Brighton fan, Atilla the Stockbroker.

My nephews company has a box there and my son lives in Tooting. Family day out - hopefully it’s on a Saturday. The game was ruddy awful though

Was it really? By the way I PMed you a while back for advice over a Fiorentina game. I guess you didn't see it. It's ok - our train arrived in too late anyway!
Back to Wimbledon. I'm looking forward to that trip next year. They used to have a great little pub at the ground run by By the Horns brewery. Sadly, I think the brewery went bust though. (Prob wouldn't have let us in anyway :hehe:)

I thought he looked a decent L2 , L1 player. But he was physically bullied off the ball by the Walsall sub who really should have scored. Got to be far better options and I'm sure Dalaand would have looked good against Walsall.

Vague memory of watching us get relegated at Wimbledon...last game of the season?
Think we lost 2.1.
Was that the day of the Bradford fire?

Last day of the 84/85 season. Pretty sure it was the same day as the Bradford fire.

Oh heck, sorry about that Peter I only just noticed the number 1 near the top of the screen and realised it what it meant! It's only been there for 10 months too 😂 Between being a fairly infrequent messageboard user and having to clear pop ups and clickbait before being able to read anything, it completely passed me by unfortunately.
It's a shame you missed out on the Franchi experience, I've been three times and despite it being a big open concrete bowl they still manage to whip up a feverish atmosphere. It's under development now so the capacity is drastically reduced, but god knows when they'll finish it. Between Italian politics and construction red tape, it means that nothing on that scale is ever straightforward. When they do, the two ends of the ground will be closer to the pitch at least. At present it resembles old Stamford Bridge.
I had heard of By the Horns but didn't know of the pub. I used to live in SW17 in a former life, although it was closer to Tooting Bec then leafy Wimbledon. Micro brewing seems to have made a comeback in the past decade, so it's a shame to see any of them go.

Also the day of the last edition of the pink football Echo, I have a copy up in my loft. I think from memory Tarki Micallef scored our goal. I can’t remember if it mentions the Bradford fire or not, it was usually published pretty quickly after the final results

I used to love reading the football Echo on the bus home. Remarkable how quickly they got it out. When I arrived home you could tell which side of the divide you were by the paper you were carrying. If it was a green one then you were an Evening Post Jack.

Thank you, Harry. Maybe I'll get a chance again in the future - although a visit to the Cherry Red looks a more realistic prospect at the moment :-)

Yes, it was Tarki who scored - we were 1-0 up at half time.
If you’d asked me to guess when the Football Echo finished, I’d have said something like 1980.

2006 according to Wiki
An associated paper, the Football Echo, later called the Sport Echo, was published on Saturday afternoons from 1919 until 2006. Printed on-site, on pink paper, it was available soon after the final whistle of rugby and football matches, across the street. At its peak the Football Echo sold up to 80,000 copies.[6]

The pink served me proud for a year or two. My parents divorced and we children to too scared to tell the authorities that we didn't want to live with my violent father as we lived in fear of him ourselves after my mother left (or was driven out by his violence).
I gave up watching City and, instead furtively visited my mother on alternative Saturday afternoons, read the pink on the way home and made out that I attended the games. (We had given up on visiting her officially as he used to literally interrogate us when we got back from visits to her).
