Shocking news that he's been killed in a car crash in Spain.

Yes. Played against us the following season for Wolves in the EPL as well, scoring at Molineux. Also scored against us for Liverpool in the FA Cup a few seasons ago. RIP

Re: Diogo Jota killed in car crash
He was probably a starter in Liverpool’s strongest eleven while he was with them, very good at Wolves as well. Awful news and it sounds like it might have been a freak accident.
RIP

Re: Diogo Jota killed in car crash
It's very sad when anyone loses thier life, but kids are getting killed and blown up in Ukraine and Palastine and there's no heart breaking posts all over message boards and soical media like this guy is getting. sad really.

It's odd isn't it?
I'm not saying the board is guilty of this but celebrity 'recreational grieving/mourning' become a thing after Di.
In relation to Jota, awful for his parents to lose two kids in the same accident.

I was thinking about this aspect myself. It's probably due to the familiarity that people have (even via the TV) of specific individuals as opposed to people who are unknown to us.

It’s not really the thread to bring this topic into discussion. I doubt if there is a single member on this board who doesn’t feel sad and helpless when we hear of innocent children/adults getting killed daily in global wars.
The reason Jota’s death has created a thread of its own, is the fact he is a well known footballer, who many of us on here, have seen play live, and this is after all a football MB.
If my next door neighbour passed away, I’d be shocked and saddened. If a guy 6 streets away who I never knew died, it wouldn’t have the same impact on me.
RIP Diogo.

Just saw Kier mentioning it also ffs.
Of course sad news.

Agree with this. It's a football message board but doesn't mean no one cares about children dying in war.

Re: Diogo Jota killed in car crash
Very sad news. As someone whose brother died after a car accident in Spain, this particularly resonates with me. Anybody going well before their time is always a sad event, and some of the other posters are right about all the young people losing their lives as part of the conflicts taking place being just terrible.

Very tragic news the parents must be inconsolable.RIP

Re: Diogo Jota killed in car crash
Sad news when anyone loses their life so young. Many people trying to make it about themselves on social media, but as said above, this isnt the thread to nitpick over grief junkies.
RIP

Re: Diogo Jota killed in car crash
It's very sad and all that, I agree. But does there really need to be so much media coverage? There are 6 articles on the BBC front page alone for example. Surely it's only really Liverpool fans that this would appeal to. If it was a TNS or Kilmarnock player I doubt it would even make the front page.

I'm not sure "appeals" is the right word. And yes of course the fact that he is famous is the reason that he gets more coverage. That's why there were more column inches about the queen's death than my nan.
It only happened a few hours ago. Maybe if it's still dominating in three days time then it'll be worth complaining about

I get your point. But is he famous? As a Cardiff supporter who watches Cardiff and the league that they are in, and pays no attention to the Premier League, I have never heard of him. Nor does Doris, my neighbour who is in her 80s and has no interest in football. So I'm not sure why there are all these articles on media websites all saying exactly the same thing. Just one or two would be ok.

I do watch it, not religiously, but I catch a good few games. It’s just that the players to me now are just a jumble of names, obviously a few stand out and I know who they play for but I’m nowhere near as ‘on the ball’ as I was in my younger days. I try and keep up to speed with the Wales squads but England played recently and I was googling who some of the players were and who they played for. It’s an age thing I keep telling myself as I can name players from the 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s etc, their clubs, what they had for breakfast and what their dog was called etc.

Re: Diogo Jota killed in car crash

Yes he is famous. The world extends beyond your street.
On any news website, I reckon there's at least 90% of stories that don't interest me. Can you have a guess what I do when I see them?

And the media, it seems.
By the way, only one article on the BBC main news homepage when I just checked, so Doris should be fine.

Re: Diogo Jota killed in car crash
As I type this I'm on the ferry that he was driving up to Santander to catch this afternoon. Not sure if related, but the boat was inexplicably 30 minutes late departing. Very, very sad.

Re: Diogo Jota killed in car crash
It’s a message board, people post news, this is news, albeit very sad news, why it has to turn into a debate about attitudes to world affairs and other totally unrelated issues to this is totally beyond me.

Re: Diogo Jota killed in car crash
I can't be the only one who immediately thought of Sala when reading about the circumstances of Jota dying on the way back to the UK. I think the shock I felt was linked to the memory of what happened with our club. Awful for his family and I really hope we don't see unseemly arguments over culpability and insurance for years afterwards.
