Women's Euro final: England v Spain
It's a 5pm kick off.
Live on BBC1 and ITV 1
-
Re: Women's Euro final: England v Spain
1-0 Spain. Easily the better team so far.
-
Re: Women's Euro final: England v Spain
Pubs in England have been given the go ahead to stay open till 1am if they win, or 6am if it goes to a pelanty shoot out.
-
Re: Women's Euro final: England v Spain
Half time, England will be delighted that this is somehow still only 1-0
-
Re: Women's Euro final: England v Spain
1-1 with quite possibly their first attack since the second minute
Perfect example of taking your chances, Spain will be kicking themselves
-
Re: Women's Euro final: England v Spain
England will win...calm down
-
Re: Women's Euro final: England v Spain
If England do end up winning this, hard to remember a tournament where the eventual winner has been second best for so much of it.
-
Re: Women's Euro final: England v Spain
Not watched much women's football but it seems the technical ability of the average player at this level has come along well.
Still the final ball let's them down, some great build up then when it comes to the shot, cross etc they forget how to use their feet.
Spain seem well on top at the moment.

Spain have hardly had a lot of clear cut chances.
It’s been pretty even 2nd half.
-
Re: Women's Euro final: England v Spain
64% possession and 22 shots to 8. 62 touches in the box to 18. They haven't had clear cut chances because they've been absolutely wasteful every time they've got close to the box.

Spain were all over them
England will win this

Re: Women's Euro final: England v Spain
Can't quite believe how bad the decision making in and around the box was from Spain

So they haven’t exactly deserved the victory in normal time. I’ve had £20 on Spain since the tournament began, but they’ve got worse as they’ve progressed. C’mon Espana !

Re: Women's Euro final: England v Spain
Some absolutely honking penalties
-
Re: Women's Euro final: England v Spain
Won't hear the last of that now.
-
Re: Women's Euro final: England v Spain
England haven't played that well from the start of the tournament, after the French loss they have managed to dig in and find a way to succeed, delighted for them.
-
Re: Women's Euro final: England v Spain
As someone who doesn’t want England to win a game of tiddlywinks, well done to them despite being totally undeserved. At least the misogynists won’t be celebrating as they didn’t see it.

Yup, it'll piss a fair few people off, so that's good enough for me.

Damehoods and OBEs coming up?

Re: Women's Euro final: England v Spain
Quite a remarkable victory considering they've only led in 2 games throughout the entire tournament.
2-0 down with 12 minutes to go in the quarters, 96th minute equaliser and 119th minute winner in the semi, and coming from behind in the final. They scored 6 out of 12 penalties in the shootouts.
They certainly rode their luck, but somehow found a way.

England won the last women’s Euros at Wembley 3 years ago.
If you’d already forgotten that (arguably bigger) win, then I think you’ll survive the supposed next few years of 24/7 media onslaught about this win.

The technical & physical capabilities on show made the whole tournament a good watch (IMHO).
Thought Hampton was superb throughout the tournament especially given historical / current issues with her eyesight.
Whether England were lucky doesn't really matter. They won and it will be so insprational for girls ... not just in England.

Im not sure, they won the last Euro's ( held in England ) and got to the final of the World Cup
its was hardly a media onslaught then, won't expect it to be now

Last euro's my club had a few young girls ask to join, enough to start a U10 / 11 girls team ( we did have U14 and U13 girls teams at the time ) from a personally post of view, we have zero extra interest at U14 girls, nothing, not even a message, we kept the U14 going ( now play ladies ) but the U13 disbanded which is a shame, research shows that 43% of girls quit sports in the 1st year of secondary school, now thats a shocking % and one that society would be ashamed of
so while the ladies / girls game will always have its haters, the standard is improving, some of them little one / two touch triangles Spain used were outstanding, take it for what it is and its enjoyable

If the Woman’s game has its haters, it’s purely down to over promotion in the media.
I tuned in and I thought it was a pretty poor standard.
I don’t think that anybody would hate on the game if it wasn’t as politicized or promoted as it is.

You can't say that when women's football was banned in the UK between 1921 and 1971. I accept that there has perhaps been a degree of over compensation from such days in the modern era, but there are sports (e.g. athletics and tennis) where the coverage women receive is more or less equal to men and no one bats an eyelid.
My view is that rather than looking at women's football in a manner that centres on making comparisons with how inferior it is to the men's game, it should be enjoyed for what it is. For me, the standard of the women's game has risen quite dramatically in the past twenty years or so and the crowds they get these days emphasises the progress the sport has made.
Not sure what you mean by politicised either.

I'd agree with that, after last time, I did turn it on for the penalties, it was so disappointing why didn't the keepers try to save the shots, like last time?
Anyway move to the other board now the football season starts now.
-
Re: Women's Euro final: England v Spain
Maybe men's football sees its own reflection in the hype and pomp and doesn't like what it sees? Or is disappearing up its own arse the sole preserve of the men's game?
-
Re: Women's Euro final: England v Spain
Wasn't it someone on here that said Lucy Bronze could play professionally at mens football.🤣
-
Re: Women's Euro final: England v Spain
Thirded. There's a degree of gaslighting going on with it.
I wholly enjoyed it. I think the team come across quite well, as does Sarina Wegmann the manager.
Technically it's comparable to men's football and in terms of player behaviour it's vastly better. Obviously it's much slower and less powerful, which is notable, but a good game of football is a good game of football.

Certainly not professionally in the Men’s game but they could learn a thing or two about passion for the cause and resilience from her.

Re: Women's Euro final: England v Spain
As one who has poo pooed the women's game for a long time I found myself quite engrossed in the matches I have watched during this tournament. Possibly out of boredom I decided to give it a go and was surprised how much I enjoyed it. The patterns of play are quite indistinguishable from the men's game. If you can ignore the obvious differences in power and athleticism it is not a bad spectacle. With regards to the final itself, I'm glad the Lionesses won but with a goalscoring forward Spain would have won at a canter.

I find myself agreeing with what you say.
I remember many years ago watching England versus the USA in the Women's Rugby World Cup Final at the Arms Park.
It was fantastic to watch, primarily due to the inherent weakness of women rugby players.... kicking (or the lack of it).
At a time when the men's game seemed to be obsessed with box-kicking, and long, raking kicks deep into the opposition territory, the women were keeping it in hand....it was refreshing to watch.
Same with women's football, seems far less tainted than the men's game - less theatrical and more honest endeavour.

if the game didnt have promotion, then it will never grow
ive had this discussion a few times, if people dont want to watch it, thats fine, im not interested in Rugby, so I dont watch it, but when its being discussed I certainly dont feel the need to tell everyone how much I hate it and all its faults
I know certain people are making a living out of the hate though, so maybe its just that, a living , Joey Barton for one
not sure how its politicized though

Re: Women's Euro final: England v Spain
a couple of seasons back me and my daughter ditched following the men's Cardiff City team in favour of the women's Cardiff City team, the quality of the football played by the men's team was diabolical and we'd had enough, we followed the women's team pretty much everywhere and were thoroughly entertained.. in doing so we saved hundreds of pounds and they went on to sweep the board and win everything there was to win.
if nothing else the England women's team has highlighted how much the men's team has underachieved in comparison.

Re: Women's Euro final: England v Spain
Women's tennis used to be good, Tracy Austin v Chris Evert that was great, until it turned into Tyson Fury's and Frank Bruno's in dresses. I expect football will head in the same direction.
