Lucky , lucky Cardiff?
Are we taking over the “lucky, lucky” moniker from Arsenal?
We’re undefeated and have not let in a goal from open play…but have we managed that more by luck than judgement?
These last two games this week have been prime examples in my opinion.
Long may it continue, by the way!

Being pedantic, we conceded against Swindon

I do wonder whether we are riding the crest of a lucky wave a bit at the moment

Lucky for 10 straight games feels a bit of a stretch
Maybe they're just a good team?

I think that it's somewhere in between us being a good outfit with a coach who has been ideas, and the standard in this division being dog awful, it truly is poor.

New ideas...

Re: Lucky , lucky Cardiff?
I just hope that while we’re riding this lucky wave that the players are also improving as a team. The whole squad should now be getting used to BBM’s ideas and ways of playing.
Let’s hope we stay lucky until the end of the season.

We have already been unlucky with some injuries that are long term but not sure we are more or less unlucky with other sides
And yes the standard is not great in this division based on the games I have seen so far

I think there is a big difference in the quality of finishing. We’ve offered up quite a few good chances in recent games whereas in the Championship it would result in a goal say 75% of the time and possibly 90% of the time in the Premier league but you get away with it in league 1.
We are a good team at this level and then you have that intimidation factor like Stockport on Saturday retreating to their own box for the last 10 minutes which afforded us that one opportunity to score.
Liverpool score a lot of very late goals in the Premier league for that reason too

Re: Lucky , lucky Cardiff?
What looks like luck is usually just persistence paying off.
The harder I work, the luckier I get.
The difference between ordinary and extraordinary is that little extra.

Apparently, with pre-season, fifteen games unbeaten.

I’m no great believer in stats in football but I wonder what our xG is vs expected xG over these games and equally xG conceded vs expected xG conceded.

This website has us 7th for xG and the best for xG conceded so far this season. Worth considering most other teams have played a game more: https://theanalyst.com/competition/e...ague-one/stats
We're 5th for xG per 90 and still the best for xG conceded per 90. No idea how useful any of these things are though

Re: Lucky , lucky Cardiff?
We've been fortunate, but we've also taken our chances and have an excellent goal keeper. We've also got the best goal difference across all four divisions.

Don't disagree with the sentiments of that but I suppose the question then is ( and the same for any other side with aspirations for progression) is how well would we adapt with this side if we went up and what additions would we need to meet the gap - part of that for us is how much more growth there is in our youngsters as we know what the likes of Robinson and NG can do at championship
For me lucky or not I am just enjoying my football more this season that in the last few years where I went through habit and not want but now I am looking forward to match day - if our luck doesn't last beyond Saturday then so be it but if we see the same level of application and way of playing I suspect we will get luckier more often than not - well that's my hope anyway 👍

Re: Lucky , lucky Cardiff?
I think the only game we’ve been lucky in was the Port Vale game, where the Lino go the offside wrong.
Against Stockport we dominated the last 15+7 minutes and were going to be the only side to score. Last night Exeter were just poor, they had no belief, I didn’t see any luck.

Think we might have got lucky with their disallowed goal.

Re: Lucky , lucky Cardiff?
I think the opinion that best matches my own is: the quality of finishing and officiating in L1 is very poor.
We would need to tighten up considerably if we were playing in the championship.
Certainly the current coaching setup is better equipped to get us ready if we were to make the step up.

Re: Lucky , lucky Cardiff?
Man City won the league by a few millimetres when Liverpool’s ball didn’t fully cross the line.
They were lucky, but they were also one of the best teams in the world that season.
We can be both lucky and good.
-
Re: Lucky , lucky Cardiff?
I think belief may be a factor too. Letting so many players go that were part of losing so many games and flirting with relegation the previous couple of seasons could well have demoralised the squad. I was worried about some of that carrying over to this season, that first win was vital in my opinion to get over that. There are other factors as mentioned, having a manager and coaches who seem to be able to improve players is something we haven't had in a long time.
-
Re: Lucky , lucky Cardiff?
Hopefully, the more they practice, the luckier they get.
-
Re: Lucky , lucky Cardiff?
I have a work colleague who’s a Port Vale fan and he’s been moaning all season, except last weekend, about how unlucky they’ve been.
Not just against us but in match after match he reckons they’ve been the better side. And he claims they’ll be a top-6 side when their luck turns.
Who knows, it’s early doors but it’s much more fun following the lucky team.

Re: Lucky , lucky Cardiff?
Me and some mates like a game of poker every month. One of them has gained a bit of a reputation for being luckier than the rest of us. Its not that he has any more luck than the rest of us, it's because he puts himself in a position to appear to get more luck.
He's a good player but knows how to make the best of a good opportunity when it arises. The same I think applies to us at the moment.
-
Re: Lucky , lucky Cardiff?
I reckon bad luck outweighs good luck during my 63 years following the City…………I s’pose the majority of fans reckon that about their clubs though but the turnaround this season is something I feel us lot deserve.

Exactly.
No such thing as luck.
Some years ago, there was an experiment in a yank uni.
They asked students whether they felt they were generally lucky or unlucky, and split them into groups.
\they gave each student an identical task - to count the pictures in a newspaper.
However, one page was printed, in very large letters, with "show this page to the examiner and claim ten dollars" or something like that - but no picture.
Almost all the "lucky" ones claimed the money, almost all the "unlucky" ones didn't.
