Scapegoats today: Migrants and the BBC

WTF have we become in this country? This government is really starting to scare me.

The RN to turn back migrants. Could you if you saw fellow human beings in trouble at sea just turn back the boat and just look on whilst they drowned?

And the attack on our BBC, yes our BBC which costs 43p per day and includes the following.

It's pathetic isn't it, there's a list which they're going to be ticking off in the next few days, all solely to try and keep the worst Prime Minister of my lifetime in a job.

Re. the BBC you're argument is pretty hollow,. One of my lads works for the BBC, and they have spent hundreds of millions on a ponsy building that doesn't work. Radio stations that hardly have any listeners, and the best stuff on BBC TV isn't made by the BBC. Oh, and if you really want news that isn't slanted, don't bother with the BBC. It's pants, utter pants.

Truthfully ? I think you have to take a cross-section. Ironically, aside from the Boris-bashing news stories, the BBC - along with pretty much 90% of news outlets - have preached Government/State mantra on Covid for nearly 2 years.

The news channels mostly accused of left wing bias are the BBC and Channel 4. Both are in this government's gunsights. If they get their way where would you go to get a cross-section?

Completely agree with the OP's sentiment on migrants. The media has dehumanised migrants to an extraordinary level. The media also ensures that the conversation never reaches the logical point of discussing the causes of migration and how Britain and the 'West' is almost entirely responsible for people fleeing the Middle-East and North Africa into Europe.

The BBC is a joke of an organisation in terms of its news bias. John Pilger is bang on the money when he says that it is an incredibly refined state propaganda service. The most extreme examples being the attacks on Jeremy Corbyn. Regardless of your political opinions, you have to admit that portraying him against a communist Russian-style background, superimposing a 'Make Britain Great Again' hat onto his head, and ending a Newsnight programme with a clip portraying him as Voldermort in a Harry Potter film is an absolute scandal. And those examples are just the tip of the iceberg.

I'd recommend Media Lens as a great resource for highlighting press bias. The fact that they highlight the bias in publications and sources that are generally regarded as unbiased like the BBC, and more supposedly centre/left publications like the Guardian, was quite educational for me in terms of learning how to spot bias in writing and how genuinely unbiased journalists write fact-based articles.

Personally I use Reuters as a good source of factual reporting without bias in the way the articles are written. I keep an eye on Simple Politics as a good way of impartially simplifying politics news and providing both sides of an argument. Declassified UK is a great resource for exposing issues on foreign policy, written by genuine investigative journalists. Ironically, they've just broken a story on a CIA-linked organisation that has been funding UK media groups to the tune of £2.6m!

Other individual journalists that I think are worth following are Jonathan Cook, Peter Oborne and Craig Murray. Reporters Without Borders is worth a look if you want to learn more about issues relating to press freedom and it's worth noting that the UK ranks well behind many other European countries in the press freedom index.

I think, as is often the case, there is a bit of hysteria here.

The Royal Navy being involved in a crisis at sea, involving refugees, migrants and people smugglers is not an unusual or wrong state of affairs. It's what they do. I think you do the navy a disservice if you think they are only capable of firing missiles at people. A huge amount of their work is humanitarian.

On the BBC..I'm a big supporter of it. I think it's funding model is archaic but it is good value for money. I also think some of the accusations of bias are fair and something the BBC itself recognising it needs to address. The news website in particular stands out for me, in terms of the news agenda and what they decide to make as the main stories (which is often different to the six o clock TV news btw).

Talk of nazis, as ever, is way overblown.

Talk of nazis is in no way overblown. I’m not saying anyone on here has views like a nazi however the constant dehumanising of refugees by the right wing media, contributors such as Farage and this Tory cabinet are very troubling.

As someone who has read extensively about the rise of the nazis and European history post WW1, I assure you that the UK reconsidering how to fund it's main public service broadcaster and the navy becoming involved in the rescue of migrants at sea is in no way comparable to the crimes or policies the German National Socialist Workers party engaged in.

Seriously, sometimes we all need reality checks and to row things back a bit and this is one of them.

Are they being persecuted? Surely more wouldn't come if that were the case? Are they not being saved at sea by a British Institution and then looked after by the British state whilst their cases are processed?

When sub-standard accommodation was reported, the site was closed. Most now housed in hotels that prior to this people would holiday in.

I'm not saying it's the land of milk and honey at all, and I wish all genuine applicants the best, but I think you are mistaking people expressing a desire to solve this problem for persecution.

I am all ears for genuine examples of widespread persecution, but I'm not sure it exists, and certainly it is in no way comparable to the nazis victims - top clue here being that migrants are desperate to enter Britain. Jews were desperate to leave Germany.

Isn’t the point that the Tories with their childish and ludicrous operations red pie, big meat, pork dog or whatever they’re called, just emphasing the old faithfuls of BBC and immigrant bashing that they know will go down well with their base support, as well as doing away with Covid restrictions, as a means of trying to divert attention away from their leader’s predicament?
