Was the main story on all the German, French, Dutch websites I looked at yesterday too.
Reality is they are the most famous family in the world and the King getting cancer is big news.
US regional papers rely on the Associated Press a lot too. They aren't quite the same as our regional press, and include national and international news far more

I know this isn't the point you are making but actually the nation state that is the United States is one of the oldest on earth now.

It was just a whimsical comment, as you guessed. Like many developed countries, the population there is ageing, of course.
Japan is a particularly interesting example as immigrants are not really fully integrated to there.

I've had a great deal to do with the Japanese, both in a private and professional capacity. Their society is highly complex and they are enormously conservative in many ways.
