Massive gambler Willie Thorne. Lost a lot of money.
Back in the Hey Day of Snooker. I think that it still gets decent viewing figure, although it was more popular with youngsters. Those were the days of snooker halls (anyone remember Boxers at the maelfa shopping centre-Llanedeyrn-Billy Waith owned it-Think there was one in Ely as well. Remember looking through my mums catalogue looking at Snooker Cues, you could get a replica of whatever player was popular-jimmy white stood next to his cue.
Declared bankrupt a few years ago owing about 1/2 million. Had his bankruptcy restrictions extended after borrowing more money.
Always a decent player but never really managed to become one of the elite and challenge regularly for tournaments, but always came across as a decent guy.
He made a ridiculous amount of 147 breaks in practice.
He used to break the balls and go for a maximum every time. If he missed, he’d set the balls up again and go again.
Remember him saying that in an interview yrs ago.
On the downside, went off him a bit, when he started touring with Gazza, doing smoker nights. Gazza was in a bad way at the time, and it was pitiful to watch. Looked like Thorne was taking advantage for cash.
Rest in peace.
I expected him to make it to at least a century
