Go back 30 years before that too

The population of the city of Cardiff is about 360k
If you add in nearby built areas like Penarth and Barry it gets to about 450 k
Newcastle and Nottingham as cities are both smaller than Cardiff but add in the urban areas that are joined to them they are much bigger
I don't know where you have been getting your data but it's incorrect
Newcastle , Nottingham both far bigger urban populations than Cardiff

Ipswich spent a lot more time in the top flight historically and have European honours, they're also riding the crest of a wave at the moment, their attendances weren't this good last time they were in the Championship
You generally build a larger fanbase through sustained seasons in the top flight, something we haven't managed in the past 60 years. I think our attendances are pretty good considering how long we spent outside the top flight bouncing between the bottom 2 divisions.

I think are attendances are OK but no more than that
I sincerely hope that future crowds at the CCS improve
Everyone's a winner in that regard

If you Google ‘Population of Cardiff Metropolitan Area’ it’s 1,097,000, the Newcastle equivalent is 823,000, the Nottingham equivalent is 807,000 but if you include Derby, why would you though?, it’s 1,610,00. But that could be reversed and say it’s the Derby Metropolitan area that’s 1,610,000

Cardiff’s population will be close to 400,000 in 2024, backing up what goats says, when you add 45,000 students for 9 months a year it’s in the top ten city population’s within the Uk
Off the top of my head only London ,Birmingham,Leeds , Sheffield, Glasgow ,Edinburgh ,Bristol , Manchester And Liverpool are bigger. Only Leeds has one club and also draws support from Wakefield ( as do Huddersfield). Leicester and Coventry are almost as big but they are surrounded by numerous clubs.
The UDZ is 1m 097k

They might be potential Cardiff fans but as always with us it's getting them to support us that's the problem
But that isn’t what I said. I am pretty confident we are the football club with the most people as their closest football club in the UK. We will get more fans if we stop being shit. The tide will turn, and losing a generation didn’t help.

The metropolitan population of Cardiff at 1 .1 million includes the population of Newport, 12 miles away 200 k .....Bridgend , 130 k .....18 miles away ....and much of the south wales valleys
Since when is Newport and Bridgend and Aberdare and Merthyr part of urban Cardiff ?
There is clearly a built up , continuous urban zone around Newcastle and Nottingham which makes them far bigger centres of population than Cardiff
The Cardiff urban area of around 450 k is clearly smaller than Newcastle at 823 k and Nottingham at 807 k
If you are going to use the metropolitan definition of Cardiff .....which includes 200000 people from Newport in its total ......ask them if they are from Cardiff ......then the large urban areas close to Nottingham have to be included , like Derby and Mansfield ......making Nottingham even bigger again
Metropolitan means the extent or influence of a city , the urban population is different and refers to the immediate built up areas where districts , suburbs and towns merge
Bridgend clearly isn't a part of urban Cardiff .....there are fields and meadows and cows for 18 miles between the settlements ......yet for administrative and cultural and employments it's part of if you wish .....greater Cardiff ?
But Nottingham and Newcastle have a big urban population surrounding them for several miles ....which is why they are seen as bigger cities than Cardiff even though their populations initially seem smaller
If you wander around Newcastle or Nottingham , visit the train stations , see the buildings it's obvious they serve a bigger population than Cardiff
Hope this explains things

We don’t need Newport, and some of those urban areas around Newcastle are just as far away as ponty from cardiff? It’s like saying Nottingham includes Derby…. Do we include Bridgend and Merthyr too?
How is Gateshead not just part of Newcastle? It’s like saying one side of the taff is a different city to the other really…..penarth is only spilt by a river is it not?

It's about the best explanation of the size of Newcastle, Nottingham and Cardiff urban areas
The figures given by some people on here about a Cardiff urban population of 1.1 million people include Newport which itself has an urban area of 300 k
The urban areas around Newcastle itself than make up an urban population of 823k are joined at the hip to Newcastle......Gateshead, North Shields , North Tyne side
You can't expect people to include Barry and Bridgend as part of greater Cardiff
That's why Newcastle has a bigger urban area than Cardiff . It's not about opinions , it's based on population data .

Barry and Penarth and are not part of the urban area of 1,000,097 , so you could argue it’s much bigger as both places should be
Bridgend is also around 140k not 24,000 so it could be bigger still

Re: Championship attendances this weekend
We have played top flight football twice in the past 60 years or so. Spent 20 years dying on our arses in a decaying stadium, better known for for football related violence that what happened on the playing field. Since going up to the championship we've been half decent, and apart from Dave Jones' sides (sporadically) and Warnocks for about 3-4 months, the football has been pretty shit. Another important factor is how a community is formed, and how a football club becomes the pivot within that Community, Cardiff have never been that. An interesting study would be why some football clubs get such fantastic support when they haven't been that successful, but it seems that the club is entwined within the culture of the Town or City.

Not disagreeing with that Eric. Big club, bigger than than us i agree and i remember them being among the best teams in the 70s and 80s But they have not been more successful than us in past 20 years.

That's a map of the Newcastle urban area , tyneside
Unless you are blind you can see the reason why Newcastle.....greater Newcastle, urban Newcastle......whatever you want to call it is far bigger in area and population than Cardiff
If you just take Newcastle, Gateshead and Wallsend you have a population bigger than Cardiff
If you want to try and pretend Barry and Pontypridd and the valleys and Newport are part of Cardiff and make a possible catchment area of 1 million people go ahead
There is no gap of green fields and countryside between Newcastle and Whitley Bay......its a continuous urban sprawl along the banks of the Tyne
It's a very heavily populated area close to one million people ....without the need of satellite towns to boost its size , unlike Cardiff

Penarth is about 35 thousand people . It's no Gateshead which is stuck to Newcastle like glue and has 200000 residents .

Crewe must be massive if you’re going by railway stations:hehe: Train stations are bugger all to go by, most main ones were built years and years ago with no room for expansion in their locations when populations have increased. You’ve more or less hit the nail on the head decrying outlying areas because they’re subjective. Therefore Newcastle is a touch larger than Sunderland but not as big as Cardiff, the population & km2 areas are there for all to see.

Here is a map of the Cardiff urban area
It's about half the size and half the population of the Newcastle urban area
Newcastle merges South with Gateshead and then inland along the Tyne to form a densely populated area
Cardiff could be argued to merge with penarth but certainly not pontypridd and apart from the town of Caerphilly the rest of the valleys do not join Cardiff directly
To say that what people think of as " Newcastle " is twice the size of what people think as " Cardiff " is about right
Newcastle has a big arena , a bigger city centre , more night time entertainment , a big Chinatown, its bigger in every way
I would love our city and football team to have bigger crowds , be a better team , have more music venues , etc
But it just isn't as big and progressive as Leeds , Sheffield , Nottingham , Bristol etc
Just the way it is

I don’t think your map is to scale :hehe:
Cardiff excels in many areas particularly sports.
Champions League finals , Olympic venues, Test Cricket , Cardiff singer of the World , European Summit , Rugby World Cup Venue , Euro championship venue 2028 superb hotels etc etc
Much better than Newcastle - it’s a backwater
It outperforms many cities in the UK

Cardiff is bigger than Newcastle, 140 square kilometres to 114 square kilometres, it’s as simple as that. If you’ve driven across both cities you’ll realise that, getting from the West End to just past Chillingham Rd is a breeze compared to Culverhouse Cross to St. Mellon’s. Google it Sludge, it’s all there in black and white.

A Swans fan of mine told me recently he was astonished how much of an urban sprawl Cardiff was compared to Swansea and how much it’s expanded in a short time

I really don't want to waste any more of my time with you on this matter
If you think as a cardiffian that the place you live is bigger than geordie land you are completely deluded or on a wind up

Oh well there we go then
Never mind the official statistics if some bloke from a small city in West Wales thinks Cardiff is huge we will go with that
