I don't think there is any all-encompassing definition of what a country is though. Many consider Wales, a constituent part of the United Kingdom, to be a country although it's not an independent state - and it's arguable that Greenland, a constituent part of Denmark, has more autonomy than Wales has. Greenland unilaterally left the EU, something that Wales would be unable to do.
Interestingly, the word 'country' descended to us from Latin but the Norman-French middleman version of that word was 'cuntree'. :yikes:
