Re: Janice Long radio DJ RIP
That is a shock, wasn’t she the sister of Bruno Brooks?
R.I.P.
Re: Janice Long radio DJ RIP
Got that wrong it was Keith Chegwin.

Keith Chegwin was her brother

Re: Janice Long radio DJ RIP
Remember her for the late night Radio 2 slot a few years back.
Didn't realise she was Keith Chegwins sister.
Re: Janice Long radio DJ RIP
I wonder if it to do with smoking. Came across as a heavy smoker (whispering) voice. Also probably DJ'd and involved in gigsalot in clubs in 70s and 80s, where there was lots of passive smoking

Nah she was never a club DJ.

I was about to reply with... "Is 66 really THAT young"? (my father died aged 67). Then I thought I'd better check the average life expectancy of a female in the UK before posting, I was a bit surprised to find it was 85.8 years old!
So, yes she did die prematurely.
RIP Janice Long

RIP Janice Long
I thought it was 83 for women and 79 for men
Re: Janice Long radio DJ RIP
She was pretty good back in the 80s. There were very (very) few DJs on Radio One playing decent music back then. Not many of them even seemed particularly interested in new music or seeing bands play live. Simon Bates? Steve Wright? Jesus! How did they even have careers?

John Peel was in a league of his own when it come to discovering new and upcoming talent.

Whispering Bob Harris I've always secretly admired for having the balls to introduce Blondie whilst sporting a deer stalker hat and then being deluded enough to think the Glaswegian crowd want to listen to him and not look and listen to Debbie Harry.

Obviously. That goes without saying. Which is why I didn't.
But to a much lesser extent, Janice Long and even Kid Jensen did their bit.

They were, but Gary Davies (who was presenting a Top of the Pops from the 80s I saw on IPlayer yesterday) was dreadful, as was Bruno Brooks and Peter Powell.
Always quite liked Janice Long though except the times in recent years when I would switch on Radio Wales hoping to listen to City and find her show was playing instead.

Much lesser - that’s why I didn’t rate her she was pretty ordinary imho.

I always had her down for promoting the Liverpool music scene during the early 80s that surrounded Eric's.
Not as vocal or widely listened to as Peel but still doing her bit?
Re: Janice Long radio DJ RIP
You would have had your money on Annie Nightingale before Long.

I was going to mention her too. She would throw in a couple of new wave songs on her Sunday evenings. I remember hearing Devo for the first time on her show. Janice Long and Kid Jensen would play music on their early evening shows that you would never hear in the daytime.
