Re: Ryan Giles and Covid.
McCarthy also stated Giles has had Covid twice. He must be an extremely unusual case - a 21 year-old who has been fully inoculated and yet has twice caught the virus. One for the scientists to ponder.
Re: Ryan Giles and Covid.
I know 6 people, including my sister who caught Covid after being double jabbed & 2 people who have had Covid twice. Seems double jabbing is only partially effective (as they’ve said from the outset)
Re: Ryan Giles and Covid.
Getting it seems to be the sideshow, it’s all about preventing a visit to hospital/serious illness etc. I’m more interested to hear about the new vaccines that have been tweeked to counter new variants a d hopefully prevent transmission too…..

They used to say that process would only take a matter of weeks or so - it seems to be taking much longer than that with the Delta variant and the fact that they're given boosters to the over 50s over the coming weeks and months suggest that there's no sign of a "tweeked" vaccine in the short to medium term.

Chances are he isn't a very exceptional case.
Thinking of those who are naturally asymptomatic, combined with those who display extremely mild symptoms, most of which are now double jabbed, I'm thinking there may be a sizeable amount who have had it twice without even knowing and that number will grow over the months and years ahead.
Re: Ryan Giles and Covid.
Question is what environment has he been in to catch covid twice?

I thought the same. I guess it's a bit harsh on a 21 year old mixing with his pals of the same age, but I suspect if he was 30, with a partner and young family he wouldnt be doing so much so socialising. Perhaps, hard as it might sound to him, he should as a professional footballer, take a step back and be a bit more careful about where he goes and what he does.

They were working on tweeking the current vaccine a year ago, I reckon this will be part of a booster surely? After all, the plan is for science to stay ahead of the virus. I’m sure I read the current vaccine was developed years ago anyway in case it was required for future use, like many others we know nothing about as of now….
Re: Ryan Giles and Covid.
There are several things going on re. COVID over a few threads but I think this is the best place for me to reply and I'm glad TOBW has posted re. the players and clarified, at least, some of their status re. vaccinations.
Rather than write a long post I'll bullet point my own information and experiences so as to clarify a few things re. the vaccine. All this is with the caveat that I'm extremely clinically vulnerable with an immune system that's f*cked (I've stopped using the word compromised as it's just too lame).
1. Assumption that the players catching COVID because they haven't been double-jabbed (DJ) will only be made by those thinking the DJ will protect them from catching it. It doesn't. But it will significantly reduce the chances of a hospital admission and/or death.
2. IMO players who refuse the vaccine (and we know there are some) are barking mad.
3. I've had COVID twice since DJ and it's f*cking awful even when a hospital admission wasn't necessary. I recognise that my systems will be much worse due to Multiple Sclerosis but nevertheless, trust me, you don't want to catch COVID.
4. The introduction of Vaccine Passports (VP) IMO is vital to increase the take-up of vaccine and reduce the severe stress on the NHS systems.
5. Reducing the stress on the NHS means other serious illnesses can be treated properly and increases both the quality of life and longevity because vital services aren't clogged up. e.g. radiology for MRIs and X-Rays which have long waiting lists for those who have yet to be diagnosed with life-threatening illnesss such as cancers or neurological-degenerative illnesses. This also links in to vital physiotherapy services for all patients including COVID patients.
6. IMO wearing masks should be mandatory in all public spaces including football stadia and those refusing should f*cking man-up, stop acting like wimps and spend a day with me to see just what it means if you end up becoming infected. If you have an un-diagnosed condition e.g. an immune system that's misfiring (or starts misfiring) or an undiagnosed cancer, then the last thing you want is COVID on top of this. It's a f*cking mask FFS it's not like you have to strap electrodes to your leg every time you go out just to be able to put one foot in from of the other, use crutches or a wheelchair, strap a convene to your leg just so you can take a p*ss or stop yourself p*ssing in public, or take grams of painkillers just to get up, lose sight in one or both eyes several times a day, every day. It's a mask. Don't be pathetic.
7. Developing vaccines for variants is not a quick process and there will be more variants. I studied pharmacology, biochemistry and microbiology (my PhD is in pharmacology) and spent 20 years heading Pharma development teams before MS forced early retirement and a change in career. This is an arms war and the sooner that's accepted the sooner we can adapt as a society. We're a long way away from doing that.
8. Have I said you really don't want COVID? Also, there's long COVID which isn't being addressed by governments or even planned for. Long COVID and its long-term outcomes are unknown. But I can say this. Diseases like MS are still misunderstood and their causes but one area that's really clear is that viral load and the triggers of central nervous system damage point in that direction. You won't know the effects of COVID for maybe decades. Why take chances early on?
9. This turned into a long post after all so sorry about that.
10. Get down to CSS and watch a game no matter how sh*t we are because you really don't know if the last game you went to was your last. Trust me on this. I'll be there this afternoon for those exact reasons.
Re: Ryan Giles and Covid.
If a player ended up with long covid that could end their career. A friend of mine caught covid over a year ago and still struggles with breathlessness and had memory problems.
As Ryan Giles shows, the vaccine bis no guarantee, but why a professional sportsman would willingly take an increased risk of ending their career beggars belief.

I'm double jabbed and I've got it right now

Neil Etheridge played 43 Championship games for Birmingham last season.
After his grim experiences with Covid-19 during the close season, he's played just one game this season - an EFL Cup defeat to Fulham. He's now the third choice goalkeeper at St Andrews and doesn't even get on the bench for Championship matches.

Well we really don't know how he lives. If he is out every night at orgies then that's one thing but chances are as a professional athlete in 2021, for a 21 years old he is probably quite chilled.
You can take steps to limit getting it but ultimately if you live your life, see fam and friends, go to work, have any sort of fun, then you are open to getting it, maybe twice or more in the future.

Ditto. Put your feet up and don't get stressed which is impossible being a City fan I know! Being fanned by Jasmin-scented maidens while being hand-fed grapes helps enormously....apparently.

I didn't realise that. That's terrible for him.

It's awful isn't I? I think we'll hear a lot more stories like this over the coming years across all sports and professions. Grim I know.

He does have the consolation of a contract until 2024.

You only have to look at Neil Etheridge, on top of his game last season and now can't get into the Birmingham squad after covid.
Edit - sorry just seen someone already made this point.
