Taste
My favourite trio was the Robin Trower band. The first two albums were phenomenal.

Welsh 3 piece The Joy Formidable. Criminally under the radar for years. Excellent vocalist and a force when live

Taste were a three piece as well, but I meant the band he toured and recorded with that was billed as "Rory Gallagher". I saw them at St David's Hall.

Rory Gallagher's original three piece band were called Taste.
I had forgotten about the Pirates. I saw them live at Cardiff Uni in either late '77 or early '78. They were awesome. What a fine guitarist Johnny Green was

Rory Gallagher was amazing. I saw Taste at a gig at Barry Memorial Hall in 1969 supported by another 3 piece band Groundhogs. A great night.

The Riotous Brothers.
Cardiff trio from, I think, early ‘80’s. Used to watch them at Grassroots. They also had a couple of tracks played on John Peel.
Oh, and Young Marble Giants.

One of mine too. I always kinda hoped Paul Rodgers would make an album with Robin Trower, especially as rodgers has consistently surrounded himself with the best guitarists there are (Koss, Mick Ralphs, Jimmy Page for three). Ah well, it ain't gonna happen....

Groundhogs
This was recorded in 1970 and predates Grunge by 20 years. What a band.

They've gone off the rails a bit recently but the 3 album run of Origin of Symmetry-Absolution-Black Holes and Revelations is amazing

Re: Great three piece rock bands , let's have your list
You have to hand it to Rush for being the most accomplished 3 piece from a technical standpoint.
If I had to pick a favorite I'd probably go with Jimi Hendrix Eperience.
If I had to pick a live performance I'd probably go with Motorhead.
