Thread: Did the last Labour government leave this country in a financial mess ?

Did the last Labour government leave this country in a financial mess ?

Did Labour leave this country in a financial mess ?

Do you accept that Labour overspent for the 13 consecutive years that they were last in power ?

If a family or an individual was close to bankruptcy would you expect them to have to make cutbacks, continue to spend as they had or to actually spend more ?

In other words, there's no evidence whatsoever that Labour overspent for 13 consecutive years. Indeed the Conservatives were happy with Labour's spending plans until the collapse of the banks in 2008, which according to the Bank of England wasn't the government's fault. There's plenty to suggest of course that their spending plans went awry after that.

I think the answer will depend on whether you are left wing or right wing. few people were complaining at the time Labour were being generous with their spending commitments although with hindsight it is easy to say they were. Even Blair thought they spent too much when looking back and Ed Milliband pretty much admitted recently that when in power they got spending commitments wrong.

given the state of the economy I'm not sure the Conservatives would have adopted a different tack either.

I think that whichever party ends up in a coalition government for the next 5 years they'll spend similar amounts. This whole idea that the Tories will slash everything or Labour will spend too much is far fetched from both sides.

They did make a mess of the economy, but so would the Conservatives have if they were in charge. Comparing the parties is like comparing chalk and chalk.

If it had been the Tories that left this country in the state labour did (economically) those defending Labour would be furious with the Tories about it.

Not so much about them leaving the country in a state, for the most part Blair run the economy pretty well.

The biggest issue was that when he was doing that we should've been saving money and not spending more than we had. The financial crash wasn't their fault, however how we were able to deal with it was. We should've been a lot better equipped to deal with it than we are.

Whoever is running the country when economic times are good should be saving money, be that Conservative or Labour.

Sajid Javid (Culture Minister) today said the reason this government couldn't stick to it's financial promises was worldwide events and tragedies, this just after attacking the Labour government before them and refusing to entertain worldwide events and tragedies as mitigating circumstances.

    People have such short memories.

The financial / banking crisis began in the USA with the selling of sub - prime mortgages
which many UK banks bought into.

As the Banks collapsed Labour spent money rescuing reckless banks , not wasting it.

Gordon Brown was hailed as a hero at the time.

7 years down the line the bankers are yet to be nailed to a tree for what they did
but Dave and his fat cat chums have looked after them as they are their pals.

It was Alistair Darling not Gordon Brown. You also describe a situation that was far more complicated than you have alluded to.

But it was darling that set the agenda Not brown. It's moot as the rest of your post has a few holes in it.

If you look at the graph of spending and compare it to government income around the time of the crash, you will see that the spending goes up far quicker than the income falls - so although my natural leaning is left of centre, you cannot deny that the main reason for the deficit was addition spending, not the crash.
