Because when you're limited to the number of hours you can drive and the top speed you can drive at, every second counts, especially when you have a time slot for a delivery.
it blocks the road when theres only 2 lanes and you take forever to get past the one your overtaking.
Let's be honest here it usually takes about a minute.
And if instead of the slow overtake the driver lifts his foot of the pedal there's a fair chance he'll lose all the momentum and get to the top of the hill minutes later in crawler gear causing even more tail-backs.Your choose!!
Personally, i always let lorries out to overtake, in my car I can make up the minute lost if I'm that desperate to get somewhere.
Back in the day, this is where feedback would come up with some scientific calculations based on the length of the lorry and relative speeds to prove/disprove your theory.
This debate would then go on for several pages.

Its selfish and pointless. Why do lorries do it just to gain 0.4 miliseconds on the other one? Pointless and holds up the important drivers without any need.
I remember the days when owning a BMW actually had a bit of Kudos.
