    That is a bit presumptive isn't it? Given that we don't yet know what happened

    Possibly, but there has been no claim from the usual sources.

    The smoke recorded under the cockpit and other areas could point to an electrical fault for example.

    I don't disagree but until we know the truth it is just an occurrence.

    Where did these reports of smoke under the cockpit come from? I think I missed that. (Honestly)

    It was one of the things the did know about the flight. I'm a plane and flight nerd, but I didn't know about this system that automatically reports smoke detector read outs. There is an acronym for the system but I can't remember what it is.

    The other thing they already knew was the altitude, speed and direction of the flight.

    This seemed to match the actions of a pilot trying to put a fire out.
