    Re: GLAMMY

Although I thought the England v Pakistan match at Trent Bridge was great, I'm no big fan on T20 cricket and so am quick to turn to the four day game where Glamorgan have, in my opinion, done well this season while largely playing teams who would be in Division One if the two division format was still in place.

However, I'm wrong to do this really, because T20 and the finance that comes with it is very important in the modern game and it cannot just be dismissed by cricket snobs like me.

The fact is that Glamorgan, after being a pretty competitive team for a good few years, have been awful at this format in recent years - our drop in standards coincides more or less exactly with the decline in Colin Ingram's power and this only goes to show how important he was for us in his pomp.

Much was made of how well Hampshire did to score those runs so quickly yesterday, but the game represented a new low for Glamorgan and offered proof that, although the game looked like a fix at times, no one really believes that, because, deep down, they know we really are as bad as we looked yesterday.

I'd say that we've now reached a stage where a great deal of time needs to be spent on trying to find ways of making us more competitive in this form of the game. With the two overseas players for 2022 already signed up and money tight, it seems to me that short of bringing in some specialist coaches, any improvement has to come from what we have already.

One encouraging thing is that we were the winners of the second eleven T20 tournament last year and so you'd like to think we have some young players who have the potential and ability to become good performers in this format at senior level.

On the batting side, only Labuschagne and, to a lesser degree, Selman showed any consistency. Much has been said about Ingram, but players like Cooke, Root and Carlson (who is a quick scoring player in the four day game) offered little, while Lloyd sometimes did the hard work and then gave his wicket away.

Bowling was something of a disaster, but it shows how bad the batting was that it could be argued that it was our stronger suit. Walker's success when given a chance should have embarrassed some of his seniors, Smith is, potentially a good one day bowler, but is injured so much of the time and Van Der Gugten offered a degree of control much of the time. As for the others, with Sisodiya struggling to match his 2021 performance, spin was very weak, while I'm afraid the likes of Douthwaite (who could be a really important player for us if his bowling could improve, say, fifty per cent) and Weighell were just cannon fodder.

There is no easy way back it seems for Glamorgan, but Neser has to be picked ahead of Ingram next season surely - there was no logic in sticking with Ingram for the last few matches, just what seemed a stubborn insistence that his place in the team was justified on the basis of what he once was. Those days are gone now though, just like Glamorgan's time as a decent T20 side has unless there is a fundamental rethink at Sophia Gardens.

Agree with all of this. I have hammered Ingram’s poor form but it’s been very surprising to see Cooke and Carlson fare so poorly when they have been doing so well in the four day format. Root is always flaky so not too surprising he wasn’t great.

Douthwaite really needs to work on his accuracy. He reminds me of a very poor version of Botham. All action but his bowling is all over the place. The bowling attack was very weak and bowling two spinners at the start of the game didn’t work this season. We look a very poor outfit again in this form of the game and this tends to be the way under Maynard. Having said that he does have a record of making us competitive in the four day games.

Glammy need a Neil Warnock equivalent and a street fighter aka Darren Stevens, Maynard needs some help and agree funds tight.

Another embarrassing defeat. Perhaps Maynard can explain why Lucas Carey has been ignored all season

I had the misfortune of watching a bit after Bob's post (thanks for that Bob by the way ).

It really is hard work watching Glam at the moment, even from the comfort of one's armchair!

Sheesh. It was a weak side. I don’t get what’s happened to Carey. He hasn’t played at all this season having been promising in previous campaigns. He was surely MoTM today.
It looks like Smith has picked up another injury.

    Re: GLAMMY

Smith bowled just one ball and couldn't continue - I think there's a decent performer in all forms of the game there if we could get him on the pitch for any amount of time, but I think we're at the stage now where we should just assume he's not going to be playing and treat the rare occasions when he is as a bonus.

Provided Weighell wasn't injured, the fact he couldn't get into the team tells a story and I can only hope that it's Carey who comes in to replace Smith and not him because his bowling has been a liability.

Anyone going to watch the Hundred tonight?

Not interested in it Paul. I don’t see the point of this competition.

I’m the same as you Pearcey, but I’ll have a look tonight to see if I’ve got wrong.

I see that most of the Welsh Fire home games are ‘sold out’. Is this due to the pitiful capacity numbers? I thought WG had mainly gone down the same road as England on sporting crowds? Baffling.

Think it’s a capacity of 2000 which I’m guessing would be thought a poor crowd pre Covid.

Some Glamorgan news, Dan Dowthwaite will be playing for the Manchester based team in the Hundred.

    Re: GLAMMY

Ended up watching the whole of the first Hundred game and, first and foremost, it was a very good game of cricket which, for much of the time, was of a high standard with the Manchester wicketkeeper proving as accomplished as Sarah Taylor (that's a big compliment!) and better than many in the men's game - Glenn Phillips, who'll be playing for Welsh Fire in the Hundred, has, rightly, been lauded for his batting displays for Gloucestershire, but he was pretty hopeless as a stumper in their televised game with Somerset this week.

It's strange that the women's game can produce superb wicket keepers and yet the standard of catching falls so far below the men's game. It's hard to see why this should be, because strength isn't much of a factor in that department of the game, but last night's match was decided by Manchester dropping three pretty straightforward catches and it was hardly unique to this one game - I've seen some right dolly catches go down in previous women's matches I've watched.

As for the format, I didn't notice it much because it was a watchable match that I quite got into, but, thinking about it, it didn't seem too much different to a T20 game and I'm left thinking that I can't see why someone who wasn't converted to cricket by T20, will be by the Hundred..

I only watched towards the tail end of the second innings and I must say I agree with you. The only thing it took me anytime to adjust to was the way they presented the scoring on the screen, which was hardly an effort either.

Otherwise it felt pretty much like a t20 game and I don’t see how that’s any easier for the uninitiated to understand and enjoy. As such, it’s pretty inoffensive in and of itself but does have a feel of the emperors new clothes about it.

It did beg the question to me why so much money has been pumped into it - as opposed the county system and/or grassroots facilities - or why haven’t the ECB decided to make more county t20 games and England games available on terrestrial television with PR used for this.

One thing that came to mind whilst watching was around changing the over length to 5/10 balls and why they didn’t change boundaries to something like 5/10 - incentivise big hits, makes scoring simpler for new viewers, etc. Don’t quite understand why they made that tweak to the over length and not that much else.

Also agreed, the one stumping was top drawer fairplay.

I did see a report after I wrote my message that the crowd featured a lot more under tens than you tend to get at T20 games - the implication was that parents would be ore willing to take youngsters because there were less people on the piss at the match, but I think there needs to be a few more games played yet before it should be assumed that it'll be a different type of crowd at the Hundred.

Warwickshire 135-5 off 30 overs, which doesn't sound too bad, but does anyone fancy Glamorgan to chase down 200?

I expect a lot of freebies were handed out last night (I was offered one myself in fact), I would imagine they were trying to target the demographics the ECB wants to encourage to attend as well if they had any sense.

On my limited viewing the crowd shots didn’t look far off what the Oval (albeit less crowded) looks like for the short stuff when Surrey play on the times I’ve been there and seen it on the box.

Warwickshire all out for 221 with a very good spell from Hogan, seems a reachable target but we all know how fragile the batting is
