1 hospital in London already has more patients than beds in its ICU. First of many id say.

It'll be interesting to see the UK's figures in 2 weeks as a barometer of how it is spreading. The fact that our figures were close to Italy's 2 weeks ago is largely irrelevant. Lots of countries would have had figures like Italy did early on at some point. It doesn't mean we'll follow that projection. It could be worse, it could be better. I hope the latter, but we can only see. The way this week has gone makes me wonder what the info on cases is really like.

Sadly I know others like that. One, says he's a socialist, Labour campaigner, is now out of work as he's self employed. He's been wittering on for days about losing money and everyone will be alright from this virus.

I asked him to get in touch with DWP to at least get some money in. Apparently he reckons he wouldn't be eligible as he's got a massive wedge in savings as a deposit on a rather expensive property. In short, he'd rather people suffer than him dip into this savings.

Seriously, people's true colours come out. I'm freelance, have genuinely no idea when myself or my partner will get a paycheck next but it'll definitely be months. Now looking if there's anything else I can do to get some money in but I can honestly say that at no point has it crossed my mind that maybe letting the old and weak die would be preferable to the stress I'm feeling now

Hey mate, lots of supermarkets are taking staff on a temp basis, its a bit of cash, gets you out of the house and will be contributing in a very useful way.

I think they said on the news tonight they’re looking for 25,000 additional staff.

I'm in a similar boat, but I have some student money coming in as I'm studying for a masters part time, though most goes on fees. The work I do is all freelance and it has all gone now, but I can survive. I'm with you totally in that I could never think that I'd rather be out earning if it means helping the virus spread and potentially causing people major problems and death. There's always an answer - deferred mortgage payments, there's some help for the self-employed, though not much.

I know a few people in your predicament. Scary times. Hope you can get something sorted.

I've got a 3 month mortgage holiday organized, which is an absolute gamechanger and a huge weight off

Appreciate it, and the same for you. I'm one of the lucky ones in my industry in that once it's all settled down I know I've got a job to go back to, there's others who were unemployed when it started so will be in a massive ruck for the jobs that get going first. I've just got to get us to that point, which with the little bit of savings that we've got and some belt tightening we should be able to do (unless this goes on for a year in which case we're all f***d anyway )

    Re: Coronavirus update

I feel the same as Delmi regarding personal income vs the wellbeing of others.

I feel this mainly because whilst it might be a cause of worry, I feel like I should be able to get by for a few months , whether it be through dipping into savings, getting a loan, selling a guitar or applying for some sort of financial relief , if it’s available....maybe some temping ...whatever it takes, it will be temporary.

The other thing is thy of things get really bad, as someone in their late 30s , I might actually see friends, or older relatives ending up dying or becoming seriously ill. It won’t only be people in their 60s and 70s.

The severity of the situation is really starting to ramp up now in my part of northern spain and we are getting 70 odd cases a day and 15 or so deaths.

There are many people in ICU who are in their 40s and 50s and that is only going to get worse over the next few weeks....and that’s with us having been on a tottal lockdown since last Sunday.

I just don’t understand how cases are going up so much when the incubation period is around 5 days on average and everybody is at home. It seems like there is more to the transmission of this disease than just symptomatic people sneezing and coughing on others.

    Re: Coronavirus update

I tweeted last night that some true colours would be shown in the next few months and they won’t be a pretty shade.

I’ve already seen it in work, sadly from the owner and directors.

Had a stand up row with my boss, a director, yesterday and told him all he’s concerned about is preserving the cash of the multi millionaire owner (we have plenty in the bank, we are a cash rich business) and in 3 meetings over the course of the last week it’s all been about the owmer and not once has the welfare of the staff been mentioned or any measures taken apart from “wash your hands”.

This was before a 20% pay cut for the next 3 months was announced later in the day( but let’s be honest will be longer) which I’ll take on the chin and so did everyone in the company. In the grand scheme it’s **** all. There’s people trying to survive on 94 quid a week or less or for those workers paid cash in hand at pubs and restaurants will now be earning **** all.

I’ve been helping my elderly next door neighbour and got a shop in for a food bank earlier and it’s doing wonders for my mental health.

I want to be able to look at myself in the mirror after all this settles down.

    Re: Coronavirus update

You’re a good man sounds like your bosses are a bunch of ***** though. A cash rich business should be fine through all this without cutting salaries.

Hopefully you get back to full pay quick enough.

Like you said many people have it worse.

    Re: Coronavirus update

I have lost so much faith in our population. There's just such a large amount of idiots who still think its okay to go clothes shopping, meet up with your mates at mcdonalds (yes, they're still allowing people to queue inside) or whatever other social gatherings that are going to end up killing thousands of our loved ones.

We are literally on the same trajectory as Italy, and will end up probably worse in terms of deaths due to us reacting slower to the problem. I have issues with my lungs so if I get it more than likely I will die, but people don't care about that. They don't care about their elders and the weak and vulnerable. They care about not being bored more.

We live in a very ugly society.

    Watch Andrew Marr this morning.
The NHS has serious shortages of doctors nurses protective clothing. The Asian countries seem to be on top the virus better than us.
We should be home lock down now.
    This is ****ing serious.

Organ Morgan has been very quiet. Has he quarantined himself in the politics forum where questions don’t get asked?

    Re: Coronavirus update

What I don't get is Italy has been on lockdown for 2 weeks or more and yet cases are increasing. How could this be? Can't be from people just going to the supermarket.
