Thread: When football returns........................

    When football returns........................

will you be affected by the events of the last few weeks? Will you consider the thought of being in a confined space with twenty thousand others any differently from how you did a month ago? My answer at the moment is yes and if, say, City started playing again in September, I'm not sure I'd be there to watch it live - I sincerely hope this view changes in the coming months.

You’ll be asking yourself questions quite frequently I’d imagine, should I get on this bus? Will I wait for the next train, there may be fewer people on there? This pub is filling up, shall I leave? Do I want to be on a packed aeroplane? The football is once every couple of weeks perhaps so I think the gradual increase in confidence in getting back to doing your everyday things may influence the non frequent things.

The furloughing of staff by clubs in the greedy league has really turned my stomach.
    I hope I don't forget it .
I tried to cancel my Sky last night, they very cleverly offered me a holiday from Sky Sports.
They made it very difficult to actually cancel , saying this dept is closed, I don't qualify to cancel that way.

Football is coming out of this looking out of touch. Clubs passing on their wage bills to the taxpayer despite having billionaire owners and millionaire employees at a time when we need the money for NHS, Police, and businesses genuinely at risk will be remembered.

That ours is one of those clubs makes this particular dilemma an easier one.

I paid £200 for a 10 month pass on Now TV. They weren't offering me any holiday before they closed down. I've never contemplated stealing TV before, but thanks to their actions I can appreciate it if people start streaming more.

I've been asking myself very similar questions but that may be just symptomatic of our fear at the current situation. Anyway, I've a feeling that it might be quite a lot further ahead than September before we do actually face this dilemma. Resuming the season next March seems a more likely outcome to me (with Tomlin hopefully fit by then !).

Scary story in the Indy. We'll all be having second thoughts no doubt.

People will have brocken the habit as well, I think crowds are definitely going to be down and sky will lose customers too, footballers refusing a pay cut while rich owners furloughing British workers also stinks!

It may come back, but I think it will decline for a while at least.

Attendances went through the roof when football resumed after the Second World War, but the threat had gone then, this time there will be the possibility that it is still lurking and will be coming back stronger than ever - I think there might well be a problem with older supporters and football is more reliant on them than many other industries.

This could be a very humbling experience for many, especially those over 40, people may evaluate their priorities and the things that we worry about. As it stands, i have little enthusiasm for football, although in all honesty i've been using it as a 'filler' for quite some time.

But, footballers did their bit during World War 2.

Liverpool, just 7 weeks after announcing a £42m profit, have furloughed non-playing staff. At the same time, they are paying players £150,000 a week.
Levy has taken a modest pay cut. He is still earning millions of pounds a year. His club plays in a ground that cost £1bn to build. He has furloughed his non-playing staff.
Vincent Tan, net worth $1.5bn. Recently sold $55m of shares in an American football club. Has no interest in football, yet spends a lot of money on football. He has furloughed his non-playing staff.

If you don't think this will have an affect on people's appetite for football where some are losing jobs, some are losing family members, some are losing sons and daughters then I think you'll be mistaken.

We're mostly pulling together to get through this. There is a sense of community. Going back to managers complaining about referees, and Gary Linekar/Alan Shearer talking about it as if it really really matters, players cheating, millionaire players sulking because they want to earn £10,000 more a week at a different club, agents taking millions, and TV companies spending billions, and a tournament that is still set to be spread across an entire continent. Doesn't this seem irrelevant yet?

Trouble is that I didn't say what you seem to think I did. i said the last time there was a break from league football, the crowds were enormous when it resumed, but my argument was that this time it's different and older supporters, who it seems to me make up a third to a half of City's following in a typical home game, may feel differently about going to games.

For myself, I want to carry on with something that has been a constant throughout nearly all of my life, but I don't think it will be quite as straightforward as that. However, as you mention it, it won't be the ethics of people within football that stops me going - I've known for years that the game's soul is rotten when it comes to too many at the top of it, but I still love the game itself and its drama levels which, for me, are unmatched in other sports.

I'm not sure the morality of football owners has that much of an impact on football supporters. If it did, the stadiums would have been empty a long time ago

    Re: When football returns........................

As has been mentioned previously in this thread, confidence will play a huge part in deciding what to do if and when football continues. My hunch is that rather than celebrating the rebirth of the game, there will be a huge amount of stayaways, predominantly those of a more advanced age.

In addition, the fix of watching live football will by and large have dissipated in a way it never is during the close season and I suspect this will be reflected in a considerable downturn in crowd attendances throughout the land.

Everything from public transport to socialising to holiday plans will take years to fully recover such has been the traumatic, soul searching effect of this pandemic.

    Re: When football returns........................

I think a lot of this sort of speculation is premature.

Almost exactly a month ago, City won 2-0 at Barnsley. Life has changed immeasurably since then, but while it may feel like football is something from the distant past, in reality it's only been 30 days since the Bluebirds last played a Championship game.

Today, we feel very differently about almost everything by comparison to how we felt on 06/03/2020, so who knows how we'll be feeling on 06/05/2020 or 06/06/2020?

I can't see the current season being completed - start new season again in August - possibly delayed until September or even later

I agree with this, and I predict that we won't be stepping back into Cardiff City Stadium for many months from now and many of our elderly following probably won't return. The risks outweigh the joy.

    Re: When football returns........................

Spain, with new cases and deaths figures that were their lowest for a fortnight today, are talking about a best case scenario where they start playing again on May 28;-

"La Liga president Javier Tebas says Spain’s domestic football season may resume as early as 28 May in the best-case scenario of options being discussed by the league.

No Spanish side has played a competitive game since 11 March, when Atletico Madrid knocked holders Liverpool out of the Champions League at Anfield.

In a conference call with international journalists, Tebas also said La Liga clubs will lose around €1bn (£884m) if the 2019-20 campaign cannot be restarted.

    He also stressed:

Three potential restart dates of 29 May, 6/7 June and 28 June were being assessed.
Closed-door matches and reduced capacities could be implemented.
La Liga had already lost €150m (£133m) in sponsorship and ticket revenue.
Spanish football will not ask for any money from central government.
Eight clubs across the first and second divisions had laid players off."
