Interesting story of it on wikipedia. apparently planned as "The Wembley of the north"
They were a third division side when it was built, originally with a capacity of 40,000. Their average attendances were around 12k at the time. It appears the club had ideas of grandeur and wanted to build the "Wembley of the North". They didn't manage to raise enough money and so only two stands were built. I remember them in the 90s when they were mainly a 2nd Division team. Never realised that was about as good as it got for them.
I was told that in the Kings Speech film the ground was used to portray Wembley.
Ambition? Blind optimism?
Stadium MK is much bigger with a 30,500 capacity!
Darlington had that amazing white elephant ground (Reynolds Arena) that held 25,000 - until their receivers sold it in 2011 or 2012. Their average crowds were around 3,000!

Uniquely it was the only football league club not named after a geographical area , its actually in Burslem , in the uk the heart of the Potteries, think the mighty Rhys Weston played for them.

Why is it odd that they played Newport?
Perhaps a better word would have been interesting instead of oddly. Just looked at it from the angle that Newport is a Welsh club near us and we're discussing Port Vale. Had it been a regular 3rd/4th tier team like Walsall, Hartlepool etc (yes, plenty more I know) it wouldn't have been remotely interesting.
Not as bad as stoke though are they? Always reminded me a bit of Swansea, insignificant dump of a place, sly fans and playing in white, and we always seem to lose
Why is it interesting?
I wonder if Vale Park has stables? They got those horses on the pitch a bit sharpish when Nathan Blake equalised a few years back!!
