Any thoughts on the CHAZ?
It appears to be a collective, as there is no clear leader (well initially anyway). The closest historical example I can think of is the Paris Commune but this is obviously on a far smaller scale
Its an interesting idea, I'm not sure the area they've occupied is really big enough to really test the viability of this system and will just be used to discredit any attempts or suggestions at alternative ways of living
didnt they try it years back ( maybe 15 ) on a old Air force bases in the dessert, the USAF had removed all buildings and just left " slabs of concrete " and they tried to setup something similar
pretty sure the place descended into anarchy and most left
I watched a series on the place, might have been 10 episodes, they followed the place when it started and followed it through to its collapse, most relied on " social security payments " and a few worked in the nearby town, in the end the drugs issue became too bad and people were getting burgled or robbed, 2 got shot dead and the " normal " people soon realised it was falling apart and looked to move on and try it elsewhere
a great concept, but just failed inside 2 years
i cannot for the life of me think where it was though, i know it was in the desert.
Anarchist communities, as this one appears to be, aren't just some random chaos as many portray Anarchism. They're founded on solid Socialist views, so they have the theory there to back up any potential questions, its a more equal and libertarian kind of society without domination from above, with workers councils and the like. It is a form of implementing Socialist ideals but without the need of politicians and so on.
The anarchist collectivist communities in and Andalucia and Catalonia during the Spanish Civil War were good examples of this kind of community working really well. Unfortunately as this community in Seattle is just 6 blocks and appears to be built as a rather reactionary move rather than as a genuinely planned potential government, I can't see it lasting and will just discredit these movements.
Anarchist ideas are very interesting and are quite often unfairly disregarded
If you ever watched "The Wire" they tried something like it in Baltimore to get drugs off the normal streets. It was just a TV series but the result was perfectly predictable
