They are supposed to be planning some kind of appeal - but I'm not sure what the route is or who would be appealing (surely not the administrators)? As the 12 point penalty has been formally announced (only the season in which it will be applied to be decided based on final league position) it seems likely it will stick.

Very sad for Wigan and the whole situation (including the cosy EFL owners and directors test) stinks.

In some ways I'm more interested in what happens to Sheffield Wednesday and Derby - and whether they get a points deduction. The Wigan situation seems to be unique (and corrupt) but the other two clubs waiting a decision are more typical of the type of fair play fiddling that has been going on (in the top two leagues at least) for too long.

Birmingham didn't get a new points deduction but the EFL won their appeal last month against the club being cleared of breaking their 'fair play' business plan - so they weren't backing off because of Covid or other special circumstances. Gary Monk has been saying in interviews this week that he is desperate to get the decision. Until today they were at risk of relegation is they got the 9 points deduction some pundits have predicted!

3-0 up against Hull and 12 points ahead plus better GD. They might even get out of the relegation zone on their own merit even with the 12 point deduction. Take it on the chin this season.

The English Football League (EFL) said the punishment - for being put into administration - would apply this season if Wigan finish outside the bottom three in the Championship.

On the radio it said they'd get it deducted this year if they finished outside of the relegation zone but next season if they finished inside it.
