    Our goals since lockdown

10 scored. All from open play, 4 from defensive mistakes. No goals scored from set pieces.

Before the lockdown half of our goals came from open play. That's now up to 58%, which is a higher rate than we managed under Warnock.

At least four of those goals have come from clear forced opposition mistakes (I'm thinking both last night and both against Leeds).

Our press has got better it would appear.

It's good to see us being more effective from open play, but it's not going to count for much if we lose all of our former effectiveness from set pieces. I find it strange that it seems to be that it can only be one or the other at Cardiff City, not a mixture of the better bits of both.

We need to be more creative with set pieces. Long throw/free kick/corner to Morrisson's head doesn't exactly leave the opposition guessing.

I bet Flint got a lot of those pre-lockdown set piece goals.

I'd sacrifice the set piece goals for Nelson's presence in the back 4 at this stage!

It was excellent last night, it was also very noticeable that the high press is from half way to opposition 18yd box. The defensive one about 10 yards in front of our 18yd box. We appeared to deliberately concede the space in between these positions in order to regain shape for the defensive position.

But our defence seems to have gone south.

7 goals conceded in 6 games is 1.17 per game. Our season average is 1.3

Our defence weakness are in the full backs area, we started fine , however in recent games silly errors have crept in of late , Sanderson being rested maybe not a bad thing

Sanderson is what you get when you put Peltier in the 'Defendomatick' machine and press "convert to footballer", but forget to press maintain defensive skills in 'additional options'

We've been really strong at set pieces for a number of years, especially the most recent promotion season. Its hard to see how we would suddenly lose it.

I can only put it down to being less of a priority on the training ground.

One curious stat regarding Peter Whittingham was that we scored more goals on average from set pieces after he left for Blackburn than we did when he was there. That either suggests that Whitts set pieces weren't as good as we thought or that the movement, timing etc of those in the box was improved and our set pieces became less predictable.

I have no stats to bear this out but it feels like the delivery of our set pieces hasn't been as good as it could be. We don't tend to mix things up from set pieces, either.

    Pretty boys Brentford have 14.

They also don't concede a lot while playing decent football.

Goes to show we didn't need to be the attritional fun to watch team we were to be good defensively, and you can commit men at corners without being counter attacked on and don't have to leave men camped in your own half.
