The Kinks were playing that song when Ray Davies hit Dave Davies on stage (or was it the other way around) during their performance in the Capitol Cinema in the 1960's. Their publicity team tried to say the incident was staged as part of the act when one said to the other "You NEARLY got me". My wife was at that performance. I attended the second performance when the Kinks failed to appear so we had a double dose of the Yardbirds which was shortly after Jeff Beck replaced Eric Clapton.

It was Mick Avory the drummer who hit Dave Davies. They hated each other.Avory hit him with a cymbal. He thought he'd killed him.

My wife who was there recollects the argument differently. However I've just googled it and it seems you are right.

So did I. I was amazed how many young people were in attendance especially as I expected the place to be full of those who would
have supported them in the 1960's.

A double dose of the Yardbirds is something to herald, the members of that band is off the wall legendary stuff ,you lucky man .

The problem was they hadn't rehearsed enough numbers to do an extended set as Jeff Beck had just joined them. They were good but had to resort to virtually jamming 12 bar stuff for the last 20 minutes.

IIRC Ray Davies didn't get on too well with brother Dave either! I also saw them at St. David's Hall - a classic night.

I was at that concert in the front row, courtesy of my brother appearing with the Riot Squad.
He told me afterwards that there had been an ongoing row in the group.
The drummer picked up the symbols and swung them at Ray Davies and he went down with a nasty gash on his head.
The drummer left the capitol immediately via the back door, jumped in his car and drove straight to London, thinking he had killed him.

Arguably the Kinks were one of the most influential bands of all time.
So many great songs but Waterloo Sunset is a masterpiece.

Saw them in Cardiff University on the “Schoolboys in Disgrace” tour. Top band, always hoped they’d join back up and do a concert, but hardly looks that way now.Talented songwriters and good musicians. I met her in a club. down in old Soho, where they drink champagne and it tastes just like cherry cola, c o l a Cola.
