Slippery Derby have financial charges dismissed

In January of this year, Derby County Football Club was charged by the EFL in respect of two matters.

Charge One: The club’s valuation associated with the sale of Pride Park Stadium in June 2018.

Charge Two: The club’s amortisation policy associated with intangible fixed assets (players).

The club strongly contested the challenge to the valuation of Pride Park Stadium, as well as the newly notified charge in respect of intangible fixed asset amortisation and has been consistent relating to this matter from the outset.

The charges held up against the club were put to an independent disciplinary commission.

    The outcome was as follows:

    Charge one was dismissed.

Charge two was also dismissed, save for, the commission found the wording of the amortisation policy in its financial statements could have been clearer.

The full written decision of the disciplinary commission will be published in due course.

Derby County is delighted at the outcome and will, at this stage, not make any further comment relating to the matter and the full focus of everyone at the club is now on preparations for the upcoming 2020/21 season.

Corruption runs through football like Blackpool in a stick of rock. Decision making, whether on or off field, in the game has no credibility whatsoever.

The game is rotten to the core

How on earth can charges be dropped when they valued an asset with a worth of £41M for £80M. It was clearly done to avoid FFP. Also what about the dodgy practice of selling the ground to the owner. That sounds dodgy as well.

Short term they might’ve got away with it but if they’re having to do all this jiggery pokery it’ll come back to bite them

As you say. The club is now detached from its most valuable capital asset. It is at the whim of the Director who "purchased" it and you wonder what they could use as collateral for any future loans that do not come from the current owner.

You only need to look at Coventry to understand how much more precarious their medium term existence has become.

One harsh winter and they are sunk - snow messing! This is not the end of this tawdry story.

How on earth can it be justified that Derby can pull the strokes they've been pulling for a few seasons now and continuously be allowed to get away with it and Wigan get relegated for what happened there?

Rules are generally poorly written and are only tightened once the authorities realise how clubs will circumvent them. It took several clubs going into admin or going bust for the admin rules to be what they are today.

The rule writers never seem to consider "what if" scenarios to ensure rules are robust from the start. I expect what Derby have done will soon become a breach of FFP.

It's quite simple, Bob. The football authorities make their stands of, 'righteous indignation,' against the small and the weak whilst the big and powerful can act with impunity.

It's even more simple than that - administration equals an automatic points deduction.

As for the big and powerful acting with impunity, Sheffield Wednesday have had a points deduction for the coming season. Meanwhile, clubs such as Leeds United, Southampton, Portsmouth and Crystal Palace have also had points deductions for entering administration in the past.

yep they seem to have got away with one here, but what do they do when they are falling foul of the FFP rules next time? they haven't got another ground to sell?
maybe they'll have to start living more within their means (which are substantial as they get big crowds for this level).

for all their spending and bending the rules they haven't looked like going up at all in recent seasons - although they have a couple of excellent academy prospects break through which really helps, so they could be in the picture next season

    Hi TLG,

I agree with your first point 100% but for, 'big and powerful,' read the top six in the PL. Furthermore, Sheff Wed and Derby are much bigger fry than Wigan and have got off lightly. It took a lengthy 9 months to adjudicate in the Sheff Wed case, conveniently after the season finished. I also read that Sheff Wed and others also had charges, which would have resulted in a 21 pt deduction, thrown out.

And meanwhile Man Utd were awarded a total of 22 penalties this season.

Best wishes for 20-21, by the way.
