Thompson's best days as a footballer were more than forty years ago and Nicholas' not far short of that number ago and you're seeing the same in cricket where Gower and Botham have been absent from the recent test match coverage, at a guess, two thirds of those watching would never have seen them play..

However, the only criteria for any sporting pundit ,on any channel ,is that they should be relevant to the majority of viewers and that they add to the viewing experience in terms of being able to explain or highlight aspects of the game that may go unnoticed by the majority of viewers.

I think Clinton Morrison is very good once you can understand the way he talks. He’s extremely well prepared wether I listen to him on radio or watch him on tv. He knows the championship well too.

Micah Richards is terrible Imo, he’s just got that Rusty Lee laugh which I think will wear thin after a while.

Sol Campbell is awful. I don’t know why he’s even in the conversation.
