Based on mine being 5k from Hampshire to London - I’d say 1,000 a month so 12K

My old annual season ticket from Chelmsford to London was about £3.5k, maybe 6 years ago. At that time, you could get a season ticket for unlimited travel on any train in Germany for less. I think that was for first class, too.

My current season ticket is about £2k. The journey time is about 15 mins, the distance covered 12 miles.

The cheapest is £11400, trains in this country are ludicrously expensive

The price of train travel in this country is disgusting compared to the continent

Keeps the car manufacturing in business I suppose

    God bless privatisation

Thatcher said more private competition would improve the service and push down prices

What a load of old shite

    God bless the tories

Don’t a lot of the train companies, still get subsidies from the government ?

Yep, and they use it to bump up their profits, and to pay for cheaper and better services in their own countries

Be better off renting a place in either London (or Cardiff) for the year instead and staying however many days of the week you need to be at either place and commuting back and forth on the weekend.

Really ? Seems good value. Presumably travelling for work, say 47 weeks, 5 days per week, that's £48.50 return. Compared with the cost of fuel if your driving - anything from £50 upwards - avoiding traffic, roadworks, wear & tear on car, the chance to have a read, a cup of coffee.

Sorry, but seems a good deal to me..

    is it ****.
basically the same price to drive? trains should be a lot cheaper.
I bet the equivalent ticket in Germany is like 10% of that cost

Shouldn’t the situation be that the fares should be blowing the cost of driving out of the water and should be nowhere near comparable. The aim should be to get more traffic off the road not to encourage it.

Hamburg to Berlin trains are like £15 return for a longer journey completed in a shorter time., and that's not even a season ticket, that's just a return for Monday.
    Our railways are a joke

In my experience ,you might find if someone is working that often in London from Cardiff , it's paid for by his / her business , or claimed back via ones accountants, doesn't exuse the cost, just saying .

So you're saying it isn't a well functioning market, with poor natural competition - and thus it should never have been privatised?

I could have predicted this the moment they were privatised.

Re: Guess how much a season railcard is Cardiff to London for a year

    I'd have gone with £5k , 50 return trips at £100

In Switzerland it's approximately £3.3k for an annual Swiss Pass. Which entitles to travel on any form of public transport throughout the country. So train, tram, bus, boat etc... If it's public transport it's covered. And for majority of privately run routes, generally cable cares or trains in mountainous regions they offer reduced fares for Swiss Pass holders.

Trains, trams etc... Are always generally on time and there's constant investment to improve the infrastructure with a big effort on the line serving Lausanne to Geneva to serve the anticipated jump in population in the coming decades.
