A Reading fan has been served with a three-year football banning order after making aeroplane gestures pertaining to Emiliano Sala's death.

Royals supporter Stuart Webb was seen making aeroplane gestures during the Championship clash with the Bluebirds, which caused huge amounts anger among Cardiff fans.

It resulted in stewards making their way over and escorting him down the stairs and ejecting him from Cardiff City Stadium.

The home supporters cheered in delight as the Royals fan was escorted away, then burst into a chorus of Sing a Song for Sala, their tribute to the late striker.

Following Mr Webb's ejection, he was told he had been charged with a public order offence.

The 37-year-old admitted the offence and, on September 1, North and East Devon Magistrates' Court issued the ban, which means he will be unable to enter the Madejski Stadium or its surrounding areas on match days or attend any football match including Reading Football Club.

Mr Webb is also prohibited from visiting Reading town centre on match days three hours before or six hours after kick-off. The same applies to other town centres during match days when Reading play away from home.

PC Christian Evans, from South Wales Police, said: “The overwhelming majority of football fans are well-behaved and respectful to one another.

“Webb’s inflammatory gesture caused a great deal of distress to many people still grieving the death of Emiliano Sala.

“Hopefully this court result sends a clear message that similar behaviour will not be tolerated at matches.

“We work closely with Cardiff City Football Club and colleagues from other police forces to keep troublemakers away."

Sala, the 28-year-old Argentinian who was involved in a £15m transfer from FC Nantes in France to Cardiff City, was killed when the plane he was travelling in crashed north of Guernsey on January 21, 2019.

His body was recovered the following month, but the body of the pilot, David Ibbotson, 59, from Crowle, Lincolnshire, has not been found.

Banning orders cover you coming into contact with opposition supporters on match days.

I remember a cardiff fan I knew from bridgend pretending to ride a horse when coaches carrying swansea fans were being brought into the Ninian park away area . I had no idea what he was doing until I realised a few days later he was mocking the death of that swansea fan crushed by a horse .

Quite why people do this sort of thing is beyond my comprehension

There were some seriously angry people in the stadium when it happened. Good job the stewards acted fairly quickly or I think things might have got a bit naughty.

Pretty sure the game coincided with the anniversary of the crash so emotions were running high at the game anyway. It was also just after 4 Cardiff fans were arrested for racist chanting in the Cup game at their place the week before.
