Boris campaigned on basis of his conservative party being a completely separate party to one of austerity, the next leader will have to do so on basis of being completely different party to one which caused confusion and heartache through covid. They'll also want to pin negative aspects of Brexit on Boris too so will have to wait unless Johnson stands down early. Will it work? Probably.
