Thread: Can you Insure yourself to drive a car you don't own ?

Can you Insure yourself to drive a car you don't own ?

My old dear has recently been diagnosed with a mental illness that means she can't drive and as a frail 86 year old , I wouldn't want her to .

She is the registered owner of a Ford 1.6 runaround

As a full UK driving licence vehicle holder can I just phone up the insurance company and insure it in my name as only driver ?

Or do I have to be the registered owner ?

If so how do I transfer things over ?

My mother is very confused and in no position to sign or agree to forms .

Seen yes and no when I googled.

Ultimately comes down to the insurance company. Give them a call.

Just a thought kind of related to this - have you done the power of attorney forms for her? We had to put my mum in to a home back in May and luckily had filed all the relevant forms so I could control things.

My sister has power of attorney over my mums finances

I refused to let them have power of attorney over mums health as they tried to stop my mother getting treatment for her mental illness

I used to lease a car , which I technically didnít own. Had insurance for that as normal. I guess it depends if your the registered keeper rather than owner maybe ?

We're sort of in a similar situation. Mrs HaB's father died 3 years ago and so his car passed to her mother. Her mother is the registered owner but Mrs HaB is registered as the only driver on the insurance certificate. She's never had a problem with doing that.

I'm sure 1 of the questions you answer is do you own the car?
So I can't see why not.

My insurance policy says I'm insured to drive any car.

Deffo speak to your insurance company (provided you are currently insured to drive another car). If not then you need to apply for insurance for you mums car. I don't think you need to be the registered owner, the application asks that when applying.

The registered owner can add a named person to the insurance but your mum may not be in a state to do that.
But if you have fully comp insurance for another car, such as your own maybe, that may cover you t drive any other car, It's just a phone call.

If you have fully comprehensive insurance yourself then you are covered to drive another car but only on third party cover. As for your original question
Yes you can insure your moms car you do not have to be the owner or registered keeper, I have done that many times. What you can do is one of two things
1 ring the insurance company and add your name to your mams policy
2 ring up the insurance company and tell them you want to take out a policy in your name on your mams car.

It's the car that's insured not the driver.
If you own and drive 3 cars they all need insurance. 3 policies.
You need to be added as a driver on the relevant cars insurance policy.
Any decent insurance provider should help if you have a valid licence.

Most insurance policies allow that. However, if you drive a car which is not yours most policies only give third party cover when you drive a car that isn't your own.

Due to your mams health issues the insurance company would probably nor renew so i would go for
2 ring up the insurance company and tell them you want to take out a policy in your name on your mams car.

her policy is not going to be renewed after late October, shes got old age mental illness

So I think I need to insure car for me as only driver on her vehicle

In terms of taxing the car I probably need to ask her to transfer ownership over to me for the long term

The transfer of the car over to you would be the best
