Can't blame VAR for that decision although VAR is also killing the game. They need to revise the handball rule ASAP as Roy Hodgson suggested on MotD last night and not wait until the end of the season.

    Re: VAR again...

Lazy pundits have to take some of the blame as they built up VAR as the thing to save football and pushed for it to be rushed it. All it's done is i) take some pressure off the visible officials and ii) shifted where the controversy comes from. Taking pressure off visible officials is important as the abuse they used to get was killing the game, especially at grassroots level.

There are relatively few (valid) complaints about VAR at the moment because we're all at home watching it on TV. Once fans go back to stadiums then we'll need to restart conversations about it killing passion, taking too much time, adding on minutes at the end of the game so some evening games will have fans worried about last trains etc.

What it's exposed - as it has in NFL before us - is that some of the rules don't work and some pundits don't know enough about the rules to be able to explain it to fans at home. I almost said "explain it to casual fans" but fewer and fewer understand what rules of football are trying to achieve now.

Twitter Clip of what apparently caused the free-kick that lead to Newcastle penalty: https://twitter.com/nocontextspurs/s...36858324889601

If it gets taken down, Newcastle player in Spurs' half runs in direction of Spurs' defender, passes the ball infield before any engagement can be made with still some distance between the two, Spurs' player turns their back and Newcastle player jumps into them for no logical reason. It's as if Newcastle player is trying to claim obstruction but Spurs' defender is so far in front of them that any further and the jump wouldn't have reached them.

How far back do you scroll with VAR? It checked to see if it was offside from free-kick but not whether it should have been a free-kick.

Money has ruined football, and the sporting element has been diminished. I remember people saying millions could be lost on the wave of the linesman's flag. Before the Premier League came along, it was accepted that the referee was a variable in the game, and everybody just got on with it.

Fair play that was some leap to throw himself into the opposition player
