Thread: Mick McCarthy

    Mick McCarthy

Saw a few people mention on Twitter:

Wolves fans wanted Mick McCarthy out in 2012: back to back relegations.

Ipswich fans wanted Mick McCarthy out from 2017: relegation and stuck in league 1.

Cardiff fans didn't want Mick McCarthy, we're now challenging for the playoffs.

Ireland fans thought Mick McCarthy was underachieving: Haven't won a game in the 11 played since he left and just lost to Luxembourg

    Fair play

    Re: Mick McCarthy

Most Cardiff fans reacted badly to MM thinking he was brought in long term then calmed down a bit when short term contract was announced and became supportive after his first interview.

Some Cardiff fans are still waiting to see what the summer is like before deciding whether longer term contract was a smart decision or not.

More credit should be given to an improving Luxembourg side rather than there being negative attention on an Ireland side in transition - whether that's transitioning to struggling side or not.

    Re: Mick McCarthy

If someone had said when Harris was sacked that we were going to appoint a manager that would go on a long unbeaten run, take a team looking at the relegation places to challenging for the top 6, give youth players a chance, and show some fight in the derby, then everyone would have been delighted.

How did the club in Cyprus do after he left.

If you watch the highlights Luxembourg clearly had a few decent players

That Rodrigues who scored looked really good

Some players at some decent clubs - Standard Liege, Young Boys, Dynamo Kiev and a couple at Mainz. Impressive for such a small country, though it must help to border Germany, France & Belgium with the Netherlands not far away

Things have been looking up for Luxembourg for a while now though. Drew away to France not long ago, beat Hungary, Albania, Azerbaijan, Cyprus and Lithuania. Narrowly missed out on promotion to Nations League B, went as high as 82nd in the world. Possibility of joining a league with Belgium & Netherlands which can only help them. Its great to see small nations doing well

Does anyone know if last night's win over Mexico will see us go up the rankings? We're only 5 points behind 17th.

By that logic San Marino, Gibraltar, Jersey, Andorra and Liechtenstein should all have players at decent clubs.

Luxembourg has a far higher population than any of those so its not a fair comparison. Despite that, Andorra have players who play in Spain, Liechtenstein have players in Switzerland/Germany and San Marino have players in Italy

About 600,000 people live in Luxembourg its at least 10 times more populous than anywhere you listed

Rodriguez plays for dinamo Kiev, they have one player who plays for Mainz, and one at young boys most of the rest from lower league teams

Not all of those will be Luxembourg nationals, though. There’ll be a much higher proportion of foreign residents than other countries.

They finished in the bottom half (the Cypriot league splits into 2 after the first 26 games). Bear in mind they've won 7 out of the last 8 titles.

I wouldn't put any stock in his time there, though. APOEL are a basket case of a club who've had 16 managers in 7 years. They've improved slightly since Mick left but are still poor.

Interestingly, their best player since he left has been one of his signings - Joe Garner (ex Preston and Rangers) with 7 goals in 9 games.

I wouldn't be surprised if we go for Jack Byrne in the summer who is at APOEL
