I am not an authority on their music but I saw Mastodon on Jools Holland's Later some 9 years ago and thought they were quite good. They were one of very few metal bands to have ever appeared on the show.

From what I've heard they're essentially a Heavy Metal band with elements of Prog rock, they do have this great apocalyptic sound in their music which a lot of metal bands seem to lack.

You are right on the money , very much influenced by prog rock 🎸, with a heavy layered sound underneath

I like that riff heavy chugging metal sound but with mastodon , tool and meshuggah you have a lot of other stuff going on in the background

Very well produced band

The drummer and bassist share the vocals on many tracks , how the hell a drummer can sing defeats me
